i used to do hang gliding yer only held on to it with a a nylon strop height up to 13000ft its good fun doing balancing acts

He kept scaring me when he climbed without being clipped on. Or hung the karabiner on the edge of the rungs.

i agree with drjim that was scary to even watch another 6 feet and they would be in space
you can bet they get some serious cash for climbing that, 1 job a year and you earned a years wages.
why anyone would want to climb a tower like that with no safety rope near to the top is beyond me im not normally affraid of height but climbing into space is a different matter.
think im going to go down stairs now just to fell the nice solid ground

I do that for a liveing! Biggest tower in uk 1300f but i stay cliped on even so a fall can kill as hanging in a harness kills same as crusifiction so after a fall you need to be down in 15-30 min

Noticed that. I've been on courses that say a sudden fall would snap clips used like that.

Same when someone wraps their lanyard round a column and clips it back onto itself. Imparts a side load (bending) into the karabiner rather than a longtidudinal load, bends it so much that the gate springs open. Seen loads tests with my own eyes yet see them used like that nearly every time we are on a site.

when you fall you can generate 1.8T of force thats what the pack on the lanyard is for to absorb the force. cross loading a carabiner will snap them
