I reaquired an old lidl trolly jack and pair of old rusty ramps today. Im a bit unsure about ramps as I have never tried to drive up them and its not exactly flat here. Thinking will be useful when I do oil change next week

Very handy. I use the detachable ramps from my flatbed trailer for all kinds of vehicle maintenance stuff, ranging from our garden tractor to our backhoe.

Couple of foot of rope, looped around the lowest rung of the ramp and put under your tyre will stop them sliding away as you start to climb the ramp.

My dad used to loop a length of old carpet round the bottom "rung" to stop them skidding away when driving onto them.

Same here when using my ramps on a hard surface. I have strips of old carpet about 8 inches wide and maybe 3 feet long that I wrap around the first rung and place under the tyre on the ground.

you might find the old ramps slightly to narrow for modern tyres , dependant on what you drive though , I fancy a pair of those that hydraulicaly lift , but a bit spendy

Yes they are narrow, milimeters spare compared to the mazda6 rims and tyres always squash out a bit. Would it be a mistake to try? I would deburr all the edges before trying it though

I just bought a very slightly used CK WF-3 cold wire feeder for my TIG welder. It's in virtually brand-new condition. The seller said it was never used except for testing it for a few minutes, since the project they bought it for never materialized, so it had just been sitting around gathering dust. There's hardly a scratch on it, and I tested all of the functions, which work perfectly. I also looked inside at the circuitry and it's pristine, with no sign of any work on it. I got it for less than 1/4 the cost of a new WF-5, which is the replacement for the WF-3. I've been told that the WF-3 and WF-5 are essentially the same machine, with only very minor differences. Other than some cosmetic changes to the casework, the WF-3 and WF-5 appear to have the same features and specs except a somewhat higher maximum wire feed rate for the WF-5, which is immaterial to me, as I'm quite sure that I'd never be using the WF-3 at anything even close to its maximum feed rate of 500 inches (1250 cm) per minute. In fact, I was told by someone at CK to use the WF-5 owner manual for the WF-3. For comparison, here are links to the spec sheet for the WF-5 and to an old catalogue that shows the WF-3 (scroll down to page 7).

For long continuous beads, or when used with a rotator, a TIG cold wire feeder can improve efficiency and consistency.

Also, I wanted to experiment with it to see if it improves my own manual TIG welding. I can do a pretty nice job on shorter TIG beads, but when the beads are more than a few inches long, I start getting a bit shaky and slightly uncoordinated and often end up dipping the tungsten. I can attribute that to a combination of age and lack of enough practice time to keep my skill set fresh.

I just ordered an additional TIG torch that I plan to dedicate to cold wire feeder use. I plan to make a double trigger for the torch so that I can control the welder and wire feeder either together or separately from the torch, and which will also allow me to use a foot pedal to control the welder while controlling the feeder from the torch. It should be fun to play with, and I'll plan to post some photos.

Just by sheer chance, the WF-3 fits like a glove on the bottom shelf of the TIG trolley that I built a while ago. In fact, I could not have designed it for a better fit.

Back end of last week I acquired a mini four jaw for the mini lathe

but what didn't I ask ( or rather read in the ad !) it's an independent four Jaw , well is the just going to make the tinkering with the new toy a total pita. it may not get fitted

A flippin' puncture, two miles from home, on a wet, debris strewn downhill narrowing winding road, after a bad SMACK into a pothole - pulled over at bottom of hill, extending wheelbrace that came with car, loosened four nuts . . sheared the brace on the fifth . . . Rang the farmer whose driveway I had pulled into, he was okay with it there . . . walked home on the flat winding narrow road . . . found suitable socket, breaker bar, length of pipe, piece of wood, hi-vis and numerous torches . . . walked back . .

Loosened the 5th nut, stood the ~Alfa jack on the piece of wood to stop it sinking in - discovered the standard jack and winding handle are not designed for use under a car - had to use end of handle into winding eye as a lever to turn it half a turn at a time . . . spacer saver on, get home. Can't see anything obvious on wheel or tyre . . . blow it up . . . 1/2" long hole in sidewall of a Vredestein 235/18 winter tyre with years of tread left . . . GRRRRRRRRRRRR

The boot on my Wife's car only has room for a space saver instead of a proper tire & wheel. We got a front tyre flat, and found that the space saver spare would not work on the front hub as it jammed the brake unit against the disc. I had to remove a rear wheel and install it on the front, then install the space saver on the rear in order for the car to be drivable again.

Not totally uncommon - my MG ZT had the bigger front brakes, and as I found out, the same issue. Bad planning /design / pennypinching?

My neighbour asked me to repair it (it belongs from his friend)
Checked managed to run but noticed it was lean once it was connected to the tacho for idle adjustment.
I've said not to use it , because it required a carb adjustment.
They said me it was just been adjusted by a small engine shop here in my city....
They asked me when I could adjust it , I've said next week because I didn't have the exact screwdriver.

He used for an hour, then it won't start.
Checked through the exhaust port...
Completely scored piston.
But looking through the spark plug hole ,the cylinder wasn't so bad with minor scoring .

I've said them it required a new piston for sure .

His friend decided to take it to another guy who runs the fire fighters small engine shop ...
He didn't get it running.

Then he took to another small engine shop over here , he managed to get it running .
Well it lasted for an half cut time.

So once was scraped my neighbour asked his friend to give the chainsaw to me and that's how I'm now the owner of this scrap tool.
Although very expensive when new .
We are talking about 800 to 900 euros cause it comes with billet crank ,forged piston, and connecting rod.
Chrome plated exhaust port .
Whenever I'll have a bit of time I'll disassemble it to see if the cylinder is still salvageable
