What make timing(cam)belt kits are recomended?

just going to do timing belt on a 2014 mitsi L200 , along with head gasket . looking at Gates kit which I normally use , wow virtually doubled in price ! any other brands that are recomended? dont get me wrong quality comes before price but dont like being ripped off.

Is that the Mitzi engine with the timed balancing shaft? Does make the belt change a tad dearer, I would stick with gates or OEM.

On the head gasket side of things I dont think you can go far wrong with Victor Reinz, top quality.

I always use genuine Toyota ones on the Surf.
Three in the last 12 years with no trouble.

Just make sure you buy from somewhere reputable and not amazon/some ebay sellers - there have been fake belts sold in the past few years and a fake timing belt is not something you want to put on your engine!!

local garage my nephews nipper works at said same thing , it cost them a replacement engine and said never use gates again, so it sows the seeds off doubt eh

You're talking about a kit....it really depends who makes what part of the kit as to how good the kit is. I bought an SKF kit for the Audi, they probably had something to do with manufacture of the idlers, the belt had their branding but doubt they made it. When I had t strip down 2 years later because of a leaking water pump (not SKF) the belt already had cracks at the roots.

Two Gates thermostats put on my Mondeo in December, neither would get the temp above 75°, so a genuine Ford unit was out on, worked perfectly.
The Gates parts were rubbish, I tested them in hot water, so whether they were Chinesium copies slipped into the supply chain or Gates have started using rubbish suppliers I’ll never know.

Gates OK if you get a genuine Gates kit - lots of fake Gates/NGK/VW parts coming out of China (they even make fake eggs in China).


We always fit INA kits - they come with all the bolts and they are OE spec ex Schaefler group

I have a few problems with Dayco aux belts over the years and avoid them if I can!

But I would and have put Gates kits on my own car if sourced from a good known source - not eBay or an online seller - but from a Motor Factor who is part of buying group - you should be OK!
