legality of this trailer

just wondering as if its homebuilt last year like he says can you legally sell it ? say there was something that broke and hurt someone and looking at the design im not sure it is up to the job anyway

I very rarely sell anything that I heavily modify or make from scratch

Looking at the grab i say it was built for logs or brush and looking at the trailer build i would say its certainly up to the job and well made imho...whether its worth 4.5 large ones then i would put a question mark to that.

First impressions are, thats pretty impressive, but then I am not so sure the guys hard work was worth it, it doesn't seems to have brakes so I cant think you'll get much of a load on to hit 750kg, it does not look like there are out riggers for the grab either, thats got to be pretty cowpy (unstable) at max side reach, unless it was intended for off road gathering logs.

yeah my main issues would be

no outriggers

if the boom in any way flexes on full extension it will bend ram as its touching at the end allready

it must weigh 350kg already so not much load

I cant see how it hydraulically slews but looks very lightly built if its got any load on it

A lot of work agreed but Im just curious as can you sell something made for lifting that you built with no test certificates ?

As above without brakes its uses are limited unless used on a private estate.
Braked axles are not that expensive though as a retrofit.
I think it would still be illegal to use it on the road without a manufacturer plate and it looks too new to say it was built before one was needed …… Says me with a 2 axle home built trailer (not by me) though mine looks old.

With the above provisos it does seem to be well made *but* you’re gonna be in serious schtick if pulled by the rozzers as it clearly doesn’t have any type approval.

And, dog forbid, if something came loose and hurt someone you would be in a world of pain, not least as I doubt your insurers would cover it.

The chances are the old bill would never stop you unless overloaded or strapped wrong/stupidly and even then they mostly dont know the law on this stuff

but this has a lot more to go wrong especially as would be really easy to overload this or the crane

What is the legal position ? My searches dont seem conclusive- the box trailer I’m doing some work to at the moment is home built at some stage in the past. I suspect 15+ years. I don’t think manufacturers plates and certifications were required until quite recently ?

To my mind other than light use there are a few week points but you cant deny a lot of effort has gone into this to then not be used

In UK trailers under 3500kg laden weight are not plated or tested they just carry the registration of the tow vehicle ( my understanding of the law)

Ive been stopped before for having a different registration on the trailer to the tow vehicle but as long as the towing vehicle registration is visble its not a traffic offence , plod were not happy when they checked

Probably the reason its for sale is no SWL If you use something like that to lift logs or other heavy items and it doesn't have a LOLER inspection cert. and it injures someone, you will require a very good lawyer.

and just looking at the pics, why do the mudguards go up with the skip section when the sub-frame stays put? there is some serious Heath Robinson going on there.

You can submit a hand built trailer for an Individual Vehicle Assessment (IVA) - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/iva-manual-for-categories-01-02-03-and-04-trailers

The concern about something that doesn't have type approval or an IVA is blame (and potentially voided insurance) if anything goes wrong.

Agreed.
On the mudflaps & fenders, every dump trailer I have seen around here does that.
To mount them on the sub frame would require extra steel extending out under the skip section.
Most everything is built to a price these days.

Trailer looks not so bad but that boom/jib is not capable of lifting much more than the grab thats on it. He could have done with a few arc lessons before tackling the boom.

cant comment on the trailer, but as a previous LOLER inspector Id be all over the grab, and lifting jib etc. No paperwork, no test certs, no identifiable type approval = no safety certificate, an immediate defect notice, and a notification to the HSE

From the grainy FB images the "run out of box section" mod is comedy gold ...........dont think id have to get the magnifying glass out, I could see most of it from my car 200m away
