Tumble Dryer Cost

I couldn't do that even if I wanted to. It's not realistic to hang washing out in the morning before dropping kids off at school breakfast club, and then bring it back in, in the dark, in the evening. I'd rather spend a few pence on electricity.

I often put machine on around midnight and hang it before going to sleep at 1-2am, it only takes a moment.
We have our indoor line hanging over the stairs, its a good use of otherwise wasted space.

We have but I wont use the dishwasher. I'd rather just wash my stuff than spend the same time loading and unloading a machine.

In winter its not wasted... All ends up heating the house.

The downside of drying clothes inside the house is that water in the air has to go somewhere; damp air is difficult to heat so the option is open windows or dehumidifier or mould on cold walls.

Yes dehumidifier, which if you have it plumbed to a drain also makes it a heat pump, as its removing very cold water, the heat stays in.

I’d read an interesting article in Physics World magazine few years ago - some nerds rigged up some monitoring tech to their electric supply - ie immediately after the fuse box, and concluded that stuff on standby equated to about 25% of the electric bill.

Ok 25 percent let's say a round a bout figure for my electricity bill 1200 give or take to make the maths easier

So I can save 300 a year I got to go round all of the house turn off all items before I go to bed then in the morning switch half on again and do the same before I go to work then on again when I'm home to save 80 p a day I rather pay the 300 a year lifes to short


Same as those stupid oh get a new electricity meter it will save you loads yea right I know if I'm not in a room to turn the lights off etc I don't need a meter to tell me that

My (landlord's) tumbledryer packed up a couple of years ago, the bill almost halved... Son's a chef, and brough his whites home, seemed to be a wash and tumble more or less every day he worked...
Went over to a couple of clothes dryer racks and a big desk fan, way cheaper if you can wait "until tomorrow" for the clothes!

Before the Miele we had two white knight gas dryers which generated a lot of fluff which managed to pass through the filter. They needed quite a lot of maintenance (drum bearings and cleaning) as you would expect because they were cheap at £250 (about 10 years ago). The clothes came out hot and creased so needed ironing. Miele at 3x the cost is well built on a chassis with the panels screwed onto it. My daughters Miele was purchased 2017 and has had no issues but it does not have a chassis and the panels support the bearings front and rear. What i don't know is whether the full range has changed to this design. I say it has no issues but she had the front inlet vent blocked with the dog basket and she rang me to say it didn't work!

We have always had gas dryers, and I clean the lint filter after every load, and clean the pipe leading outside twice a year.

Other than the malfunctions you have had, how is the cost of operation ?

Add a caldron on a swinging jib, and your all set.....

I think fridges and freezers can be expensive to run....because they're on all a lot of the time.....worth checking.

They also dont work very well when they are in a garage or outhouse where its cold, so they are running even more.

This is another benefit of a woodburner or open fire. All the damp air is sucked up the chimney or flue.

I have a clothes horse in the spare bedroom for drying stuff, costs nothing, and saves me folding and putting stuff away. I just go in and grab t shirts and underwear when I need it. No point putting it back in my bedroom drawer just to take it out again.....

The benefits of a smart electric meter: you can see where your money is being burned.
Biggest shock to me was how much it cost when my daughter had a half hour shower. That stopped soon after......

For drying clothes I highly recommend a small room with a dehumidifier in, it can take 6/8 hours, but no clothes shrinkage/less noise/less power usage.
Also useful for getting the damp out of cars/boats/caravans etc.

I have no idea of the actual cost.. I based the White Night purchase on gas costing 1/3 of electric and the only electric used was for a small electric motor for the fan. Our drier is in a utility room outside the kitchen so there is no benefit of residual heat, also the vent pipe needed the back utility room open when being used. Overall the heat pump drier was expensive but requires less maintenance and has a longer life. Break even on purchase cost alone for Miele/ white night was around 9 years (Miele £750, white night £250). We have had it for about 10 years now.

We use a tumble drier a lot during the autumn and winter. Not many days here we can hang washing outside, it’s either raining or to windy. Clothes we don’t need straight away go on the clothes horse. The more serious question is where do all the socks that go missing go ?

We got an aging White Night vented gas 7kg tumble dryer - I don't think they make them anymore for the UK domestic market.

Gas dryers tends to be commercial stuff...

Summer rain is warm here as are the winds, we just hang dirty washing on the line and it comes in clean
