i found this pic on ebay of one of the hubs, using a tape measure the hub centre looks less than a mm to big to go into the wheel so that wouldent be to difficult to machine down leaving plenty of material and there is plenty of room between the studs to machine 5 new holes at the correct pcd that way i dont have to mess with the wheels

I'd simply file the holes for clearance if the wheel is located accurately on the centre diameter. It won't take more than a few strokes with a round file to make enough clearance. That would save the hassle and expense of drilling 5 more holes.

Yes, but you will be bending the studs, some more than others. This is an age old issue with reliant axles (4 inch) and modern 100mm wheels - granted a lot more spindly studs, but the number of broken ones and errant wheels is frightening. TBH it makes me uneasy.
if you can go up in stud size resizing the pcd would be a good answer.
Wobble nuts with a steel centre would probably work, but I've no experience.

As I said, the studs will be angled over a bit. Bent, in other words.

That's what I would do. Half an hour's work on the lathe and mill and the wheels fit perfectly even if you have to change a wheel later.

Do they make ones of negative thickness that cater for the issue he describes, with the hub being bigger than the hole?

Although if you are going to the hassle of taking the hub out and having it machined down it might make sense to take it down to a common size then fit some. Just to make things easier if you want to swap wheels again in the future

reboring wheels to enlarge the centre bore is straightforward enough, if you've got a big lathe, its a piece of cake, if not, then a milling machine and boring bar will also make short work. ive done it both ways, neither take long. Wobble nuts etc are ok, but if its a valued vehicle, and you have the ability, i would defo redrill the hubs, again, not a big deal with the correct kit

Difference is, on the old 4" / 100mm PCD, the wheel nuts were tapered and tightened into a tapered hole in the wheel so yes they will bend. Was in that position 30 odd years ago where I wanted Rostyles for my Morris Minor so needed early Vauxhall but could only find later 100mm ones

The P38/LR/Jag Alloys do not need the bolts to centre the wheel, the centering is done via the boss on the hub and recess in the back of the alloy wheel

thanks for the offer but i doubt they will be wide enough, im collecting bits to biuld what looks like an old style beach buggy with enormous wheels on the back and slightly smaller on the front, will look like a buggy but will be front engined and 4wd, i have a couple of p38,s with no particular purpose in life so ones getting stripped after christmas

buggy sort of looks like this but with out the rear engine

and will nick all the required bits of this one

i need to get the bonnet line down as low as possible so does anyone know which is the lowest induction system ?
gems, thor su's, holley , or hack up a gems and modify it so it faces rearward like a dax or westfield ?

The terms you guys need when looking at wheel types are 'Hub centric' and 'Nut centric'

Whilst this won't fix your issue it may make it easier to choose wheels that fit. I found it really useful when I was looking for a spacesaver wheel for my sons car that has non standard wheels and tyres.

I've probably got enough bits to make a usable one.

I've already broken one P38 but kept a fair chunk of the air bits, when I bought it it had a slight leak and as it was a cheap runaround i just threw a set of springs under it. Never bothered checking if it was a bag or line or valve but it was mostly working.

The half vehicle doesn't really have anything usable (maybe the valve block), haven't had a look under the mostly complete one but it's been sat for a few years.

Probably best if you fancied a jolly to come and have a rummage yourself.

its going to have to be a manually operated system as i wont have a becm which is what i guess controls the ride height normally so all l need is the 4 air springs/bags some airlines the 4 valves and the air pump i would imagine i could cobble something up from there, as thinking of linking the 2 fronts on one valve and the 2 rears on another lifting the front and rear independently would be enough adjustment for me i think

There's an air suspension controller. I only know that because the one I just picked up had one on the passenger footwell. They'd obviously had issues before with this one I'm guessing hence the two units.

No idea how it works mind.

what else you got / have you got a p38 chassis ? i have to shot blast and then shorten down to 87" wheelbase a p38 chassis and whilst i have one its got a range rover sitting on it i had been pondering just getting another chassis and sorting that first have it painted then start switching the bits off mine on to it, by bits i mean axles engine box steering wiring etc and get that driving before i fit the beach buggy body to it, it would mean i could make a start before i strip mine and get bits everywhere

i already have one beach buggy body but i may jump ship to the more traditional shape dunno yet , it was designed to sit on a shortened beetle "chassis" at 78" it was pretty short so i stretched it to 87" which is suzuki vitara wheelbase





that was all easy enough but it was nowhere near wide enough for a vitara ( or range rover ) chassis so i had to cut it down the middle after making loads of moulds to make infill panels







so that enabled me to make the infill sections to be able to widen the body to fit properly



should look like this when assembled





anyway the body is in store in the barn and now i need a rolling chassis for it to sit on, was going to be vitara but i seem to have drifted over to the idea of a range rover 4.6 set up for some reason
