3/4" and 1" drive gear gets a lot of use around here. I have seen Britool 1/2" breaker bars with a 24mm socket shear an end off undoing rusty towbar bolts. If it gets that spring of death feel I move up a drive size, don't see the sense in risking the inevitable

I started waving spanners about over 40 years ago , back then 1/2 inch was what every one used on just about everything , mind you cylinder heads and blocks were mostly cast iron , 3/8 was rare outside of aviation and 1/4 drive was jewelers and watchmakers ,[ and those cheap sets in little orange tins that you used to loose all the sockets out of when the little bendy bit of tin they used for a catch let the lid open and all the sockets fell on the ground and usually in a puddle } ... ok not quite , but it was for tv engineers and the likes .
3/4 drive was for plant and I dont think inch drive was seen outside of mines and the likes , in my part of the world it was peat bogs and quarys. These days its things like alloy heads and blocks and all I reach for is 3/8 drive , I find it a good all rounder , but Snap on rate their 1/4 drive as ok to 90ftlbs , so in theory you could ge by with 1/4 drive on a lot of things , to my mind once the bolt diameter has equaled the drive size its time to be thinking about moving up , Im like most I think when it comes to about 22 or 24mm on 1/2 drive if its tight I start to look at where my knuckles will end up if the power bar breaks . In general decent quality tools will take a fair amount of loading before giving in. I have recently bought a bit more 1/4 drive for working on pedal bikes [ mostly alen keys 3mm 4mm 5mm even 6mm} but somehow I still find a shortened 3/8 drive snap on ratchet and a spinner is my driver of choice . although I torque the alen bolts with tbn10 preset torque wrenches and they are 1/4 drive . I guess its all about what your comfortable with.

3/4 drive is seldom used on cars , having said that 1/4 is seldom used either ,, so save those for the end , a couple of decent work lights would be high on the list . I don't think I have ever disagreed with you Tom but I use almost exclusively 1/4" drive now. 3/4 breaker bar plus...

I think the crankshaft nut on some of the newer BMW Diesels is something like 375 ftlbs plus 90 degrees ,, that may not be exact , but its something crazy like that ,,, the world of engineering is a strange one.
But it must be for a reason , I heard its to stretch the crank pins or something like that ,,, not done one so Ive not actually researched the exact ins and outs of it all ,,, but thats tight for a car engine , its tight for most things really lol ,, long way from 6nm for Audi cam shaft caps .

Often, but not always!
I probably use 3/8” the most as well. If it’s good quality gear it will handle the majority of jobs. I have a long Unior ratchet and an extending Facom one, you can put a lot of torque though both (you need the right sockets etc. though obviously).
@Memmeddu do you have a set of deep offset ring spanners?
I’m trying to think of other things I use that aren’t too specialist/nice to have….
- Allen keys and/or internal hex sockets.
- Locking pliers (aka mole/vice grips).
- Strap wrench (useful!).
- Screw removal pliers (e.g. Twin Grips).
- Siphon pliers (e.g. Knipex 81 01 250).
- Magnetic pick up tool.
I presume you have a heat source (I mean for heating parts, not yourself!) and decent work lights?
I recommend one of these as well, it’s saved me hours of frustration and swearing!

I mean I have 3/4" gear for tractors and farm gear and it's never been out for any road car in all the years I've worked on 'em. They're just too bulky to be useful anywhere really on most cars.
The 2" rear hub nut on the buggy that used to get torqued to 280lbft + 180 degrees, and the thread would get distorted with a clamp bolt would be about the only thing I'd use the 3/4" breaker for, and that was just to undo it to get the threads to straighten back up, without me jumping on the end of the 1/2" bar.
If you're working outside I'd recommend some good foam pads and scrap sheets too, I used to have to work on gravel servicing a lot and I regret it these days, my knees are fu....creaky.

1 yes I have a set of them 6-22mm
2 Allen keys both regular type and Tee handle , yes I was thinking about a set of those sockets as well as Torx because many times come handy to have.
3 locking pilers, just 1 enough good but not brand name because of its intended use
4 strap chain wrench added to the list
5 and 6 no I don't I don't think I would need them maybe the screw removal pilers but wouldn't vise grips work too?
7 magnetic thingy somewhere can't remember where but I have it

And yes I use 3/4" sockets most days!
The screw removal pliers are really good, they work better than vise grips I find, especially when you need to grip something end-on.
Yes that little Gedore contraption is great, I found it completely by chance and thought it would come in useful, which it has!

I still don't think they're at all necessary for someone just getting going with their own work, there's nothing on a car you couldn't get off with a good 1/2" - it's wasted money that could go into tools you'd use every day.
If you're expecting everyday work on commercials sure, but that's not the case here.

You not taken 22mm crankshaft bolts out of DV6 and DV10 engines - you not stripped much suspension with 21mm and 24mm AF retaining nuts.
You not dealt with the miriad of hub nuts with "FT" torque. Toyota 12point 34mm hub nuts - 36mm BMW hub nuts...
I do think there is place for 3/4" stuff on cars - I do....

I do suspension nuts all the time, I rebuild suspension units as part of my job, I've done hundreds.
34/36/42mm hub nuts are common they all knock off easily with a 1/2" impact, no problem at all.
Maybe don't tell other people what they have and haven't done.
