MOT advisory on CAT pin hole.

Got under the car today to have a look.

The hole was bigger than expected. I ground away the thin metal and have this now.

I've got some 2mm mild steel plate and a bit of 3 mm stainless, any suggestion on which would be the best to use to mig in a patch?

I'd suggest stainless to keep the thermal expansion/contraction the same - it gets pretty hot there.

You won't weld 3mm stainless to rusted steel 0.5mm thick.

Cut out and bent into shape.

A few mm of overlap.

Well I got a bit of burn through, should have cut out a bit more, ended up building up weld to close the hole. That will do for now till I can sort out a more permanent solution.

To be fair, that's not a bad repair given it was in situ and using less than optimal repair plate

There is a pin hole on the other side too.

However I bought a pair of second hand cats 7 years ago and only fitted the other one (that I just repaired above), this one has been on the shelf since.

No easy way of telling how much life is left in the cast bottom part.

The matrix still looks good though.

When they were still available from Jag, they were about £1500 each. The earlier 4.0 cars have aftermarket cats available but the later 4.2l cats have nothing.

I think that the MOT rules state that from a certain date ~2002 all cars have to be fitted with OEM cats. I think that's why there are no aftermarket parts available.

Does anyone know the truth of this?

Anyway the car will be SORNed at the end of the month and I'll do the swap after that and a bit of work on the near side sill.

It seems like no aftermarket suppliers are interested in making a replica and getting type approval. The shape is too complicated and the market too small to make it profitable.

Not exactly good for the environment scrapping a perfectly good car just because there are no replacement catalytic convertors available. Yet another example of ill thought out legislation. What difference does it make if the CAT does what it's meant to?
