Sea fishing

Because I just don't have enough hobbies.
Going to have a bash at this. Bought most bits from someone who was giving it up, all fairly decent stuff.

What should i use for a disgorger? The Gemini type seem popular - not sure how sucessful they would be when its all shoved down a fish's throat

Priest and a knife...

If you gonna take the sea fish home to eat - hit it over the head with a priest and then cut your hook out of the corpse's mouth with a knife.

I only fish for trout/salmon/eels - or sea water fish you can eat.

I think catch and release is a bit cruel...

Dying for the pan is OK with me - but being dragged out with trebble hook in your mouth - mauled about removing it - then suffer hypoxia - then being released with a wound that could get infected - is a bit too much for me!

You would not entice a chicken with a maggot on a hook drag in towards you on a line against its body weight - leave it with it's head down in a bucket of water - remove the hook with a set of pliers and set it free without dispatching it - would you... (My opinion only)

Neither cycling nor swimming have the goal of hurting something for your entertainment. Don’t get me wrong, I hunt, I fish but I eat what I catch. Catch and release just seems a bit barbarically to me

I come from poor rural agricultural upbringing.

I have caught/shot/trapped all sorts of things for the pot - I have...

But I was taught to dispatch them quickly - not muck about - if fishing with my Father or Grandfather as a child - there was no discussing about the size of the fish - while it was being netted or gaffed - it was out of the water and dispatched at speed.

If you shot something and you can't find it - it is priority to find the prey and finish the job.

Even with hunting with dogs - if the dogs don't finish the job quickly - you need to intervene and finish the job.

Food is one thing - unnecessary suffering is another.

(I feel very strongly about this subject).

I've had this conversations with guys at work. Some of them vegetarians, or mostly veggie. They don't understand when I say it is cruel to catch and release, which is what they do. I go sea fishing once in a while, but I eat what I catch. I feel guilt ridden to do otherwise. What they do is no different to me shooting garden birds as a kid (which I sincerely regret).

You are a human being - you are the top predator - as a human you need to eat - but you are/should be able of empathy and compassion.

If you kill for food - you should do as quickly and as painlessly as you can...

I am not a veggy (wifey is) - I am not anti field sports at all.

I am anti factory farming of animals for food.

I would rather eat less meat and pay more for animals that have lived a better life before death and my dinner plate.

The only catch a release fishing I see as humane is crab fishing with bait bags - the crab attaches itself to your bait - you haul it out - it can breath in air - no hooks or wounds - a crab can breath in air for upto 24hrs as long as there gills are wet. Plus your average crab will give you a nip and fight back.

You might as well take them home, presuming legal size, and eat that instead of supermarket cod. Nothing better than fresh sea fish.

Priest for fishing:

I got a bit of galv water pipe about 10/11" long by 3/4" - an aging neighbour who lived down my street - made me it when I was a kid.

Lead filled at one end - hole drilled thru the other end for a bit of cord to be threaded thru it.

Must have had it nearly 50yrs - not quite the posh Hardy type wood ones - or fancy turned brass things - but it does the job well and has sentimental value.

It has dispatched countless rabbits/hares/fish and domestic chickens/ducks. Plus sadly a few of my childrens/grandchildrens small sick caged pets over the years.

Couple of pints of beer - sunny day - fish and chips from Plattens in Wells - have a paddle - buy the kids an ice cream - take them crab fishing - let my dog have a swim in the harbour - then make wifey drive home.

Nice day out... Shame the posh lot - DFL (down from London) - have joined in...

Last time I was there with the Grandkids this summer - I was the odd one out with a broad Norfolk accent...

Another hobby fisherman here .
I do surfcasting , spinning and edging .
Gilthead bream,bream ,sea bass , blue fish, redfish.
Those are my prey while doing surfcasting and spinning.
Cuttlefish and squid doing edging ...
Fun fact I've went to buy new baits this evening.

You can use circle hooks. Less likely for fish to swallow them. If you are beach fishing at night and fishing up to high water be sure you dont get cut off. The sea can creep in behind you and fill hollows and before you know it you've got drama.
Dont let that put you off though . Nothing nicer than a lonely beach the stars and the sound of the sea mid winter. A few fish can be nice too
