I wouldn't advise anyone to try to DIY a serious wound but I do think that established health-system procedures might not necessarily be the best, and certainly not the only option. There have been plenty of examples of more rudimentary care resulting in much-reduced recovery times and lower instances of infection. For example, I remember watching a TV documentary type program that showed a hospital in Russia which specialised in brain surgery go outside to gather up piles of fresh snow to lower the patient's body temperature drastically. The recovery time was nothing short of extraordinary and the infection rate very low too, if that program was to believed.
