My neighbour's cat was shot with a pellet gun. She knows we have a BB gun and this is uneasy :/

easy to say but what when the police are turning his house upside down looking for the big mean gun and mateys name gets spread around town as a cat killer

i dont trust the police to handle things like this one little bit

What's to stop her from calling in the police without any input on the OP's part ?

Go thru the whole search process, and as they leave they say "sorry for the mess mate".....and the lady is still convinced the OP did it.

I doubt UK police would even bother about thinking to ask for a search warrant for this and wouldn't get one.
I wouldn't let them in the house; talk to them outside. Tell them that you're concerned about reference to guns and cats and that you concerned about making any comment which could be misconstrued. After that go with "No comment".

Ah....clearer heads will prevail.
I like this ^^^, I was led to believe reading comments further up above, that UK police just smash down doors without any warrant.

Neighbour asked...you told the truth...end of story. If the police show up...they'll need a reasonable suspicion....or a witness with less than 4 legs!

It's a low powered BB gun designed for kids to learn on. It's 1 or 2 ft.lb vs the usual 12 ft.lb that most air rifles are. It's got a port to check the breech, safety catch etc, all designed to teach kids gun safety. It's really neat.

No pellet. The vet said that an air rifle most likely caused it.

You are assuming the police are intelligent reasonable people, it is a fatal mistake most reasonable intelligent people make.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly, but I can imagine a 20 year old officer with no clue and who doesn't get the difference between a rabbit hunting air rifle and a back garden plinker?

I hope that she is truly repentant about the damage this cat has done in you garden and the distress this has caused you and your family. Hasn't she taken measures to prevent re-occurrence?

I did tell her months ago that we've had trouble. She has over half a dozen of them. It is frustrating, they wreck lawns, they p**s on the vegetables that my wife grows. I eventually put netting over the flower beds so they can't dig in them and that seems to have worked.

I think that using air rifles in back gardens is now frowned upon, even if they are legal.

If they go in my garage I'm done for...I have a few dozen hammers so just by blind luck one is probably a match .

I usually get rescue cats...some come with pellets in them .

It's pretty unlikely that someone would shoot their neighbours cat...did the neighbour hear a shot for example coming from next door?

Super soaker is the weapon of choice for cats...or a cup of water . Water does no harm but they hate it...
