I saw a Japanese toilet, where the sink was over the cistern. Idea was, you washed your hands into the cistern then that was used for the next flush.

Someone on here had used one and said they’re crap. I haven’t. I was taken with the idea though. If we could reuse more water before it leaves the house that would be a start.

If you scaled that up to a lab office building or a hotel that would be lots of water and money saved.

Water tanks that collect rainwater, then use it to flush the khazi.

When I lived in northern Thailand for a spell, years ago, all the water for the house I was staying at was collected from the roof. It was diverted into 5' tall clay urns, huge great things. Showering was done with a scoop, in the garden, whilst wearing a sarong. No privacy there, but the crapper had a screen around it.

When water ran out we would blag some off a neighbour, who was rich enough to have mains water piped in.

Friends in Antigua have two 2500 gallon plastic storage tanks, plus a couple of smaller ones for watering the garden. The water goes through a 5 micron filter and then is drunk. It tastes fine. The water that comes out of the main, if you happen to be connected, is brown and stinking and very irregular in its availability.

Banning hot tubs & inflatable pools would be a lot of water saved. Wanton waste, IMHO.

My granddaughter has a part time job working in an @rgos store. One day last week they sold 173 pools of different sizes.

Back in 94 when Thatcher privatised water in England and Wales public feeling was strongly against it in Scotland, so against a backdrop of a rise in Scottish Nationalism they caved in and let us retain ownership of Scottish water. So we have cheaper water bills and 35% more investment per household than English water authorities. Also cleaner beaches.

We make some strange decisions: free prescriptions, no tuition fees, free bus passes for the elderly, its as well we don't run England

Down side is though, you have to live in Scotland to benefit.

Is it Belgium where all new houses have to have rainwater storage tanks?

Bermuda has always used rain water catchment, roofs are specially designed to slow it down. When I lived there in the '60s we had a big cistern below the house (with little fish to eat the bugs) to supply all our water needs.

All a bit thought provoking, not sure how much of what goes down a sewer system ends up back in a tap but its got to be better than total loss. A hot tub or swimming pool wouldn't be total loss if it was discharged into a drain. Only real total loss is car washing, garden watering and remote properties not connected to a proper sewer system.

If anybody lives near Dover there should be a compound with about 25,000 inflatable boats in.... they'd make good paddling pools.

And where do the sewage works discharge into? And where do the water treatment works downstream suck water from? Obviously this short circuits the sea/sky cycle by quite a bit...

Drink beer & whisky instead , the alcohol kills off most of the pathogens as well as the imbibers .

why havent they built extra collection units to store the water instead of flitting the profits off to shareholders
