Steam is a bad disease, Back in my boatbuilding days i built several steamboats, these were 16ft launches built of GRP & marketed by Island chain & marine services back in the early 90's. They were based on the launch Lady Elizabeth from the Museum at Lake Windermere. I did the fitting out & engine & boilers were fitted by Island chain, He didnt sell many!
Later i helped built a 28ft launch with my father in law John, She was closely based on a vintage Saunders launch that i own from 1905, Originally petrol engined the steam version had a skeg below the hull to protect the 22" dia x 32" pitch propellor.
Engine was an 11 ihp Leake compound driven by a three drum yarrow boiler made by Bicknells.
John made most things himself but got old doing it, He had a lot of trouble with the valve timing on the engine but got her steaming not long before he passed away.
We sold the boat to a Gentleman from Northumberland who has the right attitude. Originally he retired & had thought to build an engine & launch himself, An engineer friend asked him "How old are you now?" "Im 60" he replied. Engineer says "Take my advice, Spend some money & buy one!"
He bought Johns launch & threw money at it, Boiler reconditioned, New Bellis engine of 25Ihp & a fiercer prop. She is nearly ready & the intention is to see if she can be the fastest Steam launch in the SBA. Be interesting to see how she goes, She has a very slippery hull 28ft x 5' 8"beam, max depth of hull is under the boiler & rises to a flat run aft.

Blondihacks on youtube has a series of videos on boiler making. I'm sure she's not overengineering it but it looks like she has poured literally hundreds of hours into the project!

Through my old man, I have had a life long link to Steam
I had the pleasure of mucking around with 2 1/2", 3 1/2", 5" and 7 1/4" gauge Steam loco's through out my teenage years
As a joint project with dad we are in process of building 10 1/4" gauge .
I have shared this picture of the cylinders before (with a 1" micrometer for scal as a mug wasn't available
)
A recent purchase was the correctly ticketed barrel 12" ID (10mm wall) for the boiler, for someone else with the skills and codes to weld and work on later.

So it's you! - I had to build a couple of these to stop the model aeroplanes bothering the dogs....Toy trains are alright I suppose.

I have no idea why they would make 12" long matches, but this box is at least 45 years old
