Milwaukee armature

Lent our 3/4 inch impact to our neighbour. Short story, came back very noisy and smoking. The rear bearing on the armature has seized. I’ve looked at the armature and I can’t see how to strip it down to get the bearing off. There is a clip under the FUEL logo but the hole isn’t big enough for the bearing to pass through. I tried pulling the plastic but it won’t budge, don’t want to break it yet! Anyone done it ?

The tool I just had seize up was also bearings.

I bet your bearing has seized then spun-welded itself into the case.

ive had a couple of tools that the roller bearings seized up cheaper stuff though . probably crappy foreign bearings being used id expect better from milwaukiee

Is that diagram the correct one for your tool?

On that, if you look at part 32, the bearing is integral with the housing, so its ID comes off the armature rather than its OD out of the cover.

Moral of the story, DON'T lend tools. This has happened too many times to me, and everyone wants to borrow, but no one wants to pay when it goes wrong.

Fine if they want to borrow a club hammer, or an anvil, but nothing like this.

In fairness, if the only issue is the bearing seized, you can't really blame the borrower.

I am however selective about who gets to borrow my tools.

I would hope the guy has offered to help out with the costs, even if you are not bothered, its the principle.

This is exactly why I always prefer to but my own tools. I don't mind lending to those who I know can use them properly. They generally have their own range of decent tools.so are unlikely to abuse them. I could relate the story of my cement mixer, but will same that for a different thread !

In the interests of science I stripped the rear end off three Milwaukee tools.
1, a 1/2 drill, 4 screws removed and the cover came off leaving the armature in place, roughly 10 yrs old.
2, 3/8 stubby impact, 4 screws removed armature came out with the cover, no amount of levering would split the two, roughly 5 yers old.
3, 1/2 high torque impact, 4 screws removed armature came out with the cover, no amount of levering would part the two, roughly 12 months old.

That's why I've got less favoured tools for lending.

I’ve spent a good while trying to split the armature, no joy so far but I won’t be beaten- hopefully

I was thinking go in through the back, ie cut the centre of the cover away to expose the bearing.

The cover that did come apart, I popped the rubber seal out of the bearing and added a few drops of oil.
I think the older Milwaukee were made in Germany, newer stuff is China.
