0.6mm wide protrusion is all that engages with the retaining ring!
There's a bit of tarting up I'd like to do, but I've just read the lens I'm trying to dismantle (Canon nFD 35-105mm f/3.5) has some secret screws under the rubber grip on the zoom ring, so I might not need it after all.
I just bought one of the cheapanese cheerful ones to wipe some mould from the inner of the front element on an M645 lens. Cleaned up nice, too.
The lens was $25 (and free shipping!) from Japan, and I didn't get clobbered for duty either, so makes the purchase of the lens tool amount to nothing.
I've taken a couple of zooms apart. Funnily enough, I've never put one together.
Oo-er, like a performance vmax that handles?

Well, with just 66bhp I'd not call it 'performance'.... but it handles quite well and has R1 brakes.
Apparently it's restricted, something fitted in the carbs, but it can be easily removed, and up-jetted to 80bhp.

Cheap modern furniture "assembly yourself" annoying fragility of their butt joints. Upgrading the bed frame, made from the shortest pieces of native wood and hideous crooked steel fasteners. Added stiffness. We should think next time about making a frame-cage with our own hands. And no trendy pallet beds, of course.

My cbr I had was restricted with basically large washers in the carb & you just removed them & had full power. Hopefully yours will be similar

Hopefully getting the shorty lever tomorrow for the rear brake mod on my bike when I realised I don't have a bolt for the master cylinder 
Ok, quick measure and draw up in fusion.
Chuck up the ER40 holder with some 16mm dia 316 and let it do its magic.
Part off and turn in the collet holder and into the mill and make a 10mm hex.
Job done, 3x more expensive than buying one but at least I don't have to wait a week

Come to think about it we are all show off's, as we all show what we can. I bet shup up now.
Need is the mother of all invention, a few toys some know how and presto things pop out. Bloody good stuff.
The greater majority of people don't even remotely understand what goes into producing this simple bolt. The most common comment would be 'yea so what'. I say good stuff keep it coming

I once had someone ask me what use is a lathe. Some have no clue or understanding whatsoever.
25-30 yrs ago, the company I worked for used to do a lot of work for a well known purveyor of pet foods - basically if anything broke or wore out, we fixed it, re-engineered it to make it better, or even made completely new gear for new products.
Their main engineer was well known for his ability to use a bigger hammer .. .
Anyway, he used to bring new "engineers" to see us when they started their rotation at that facility . . . I can see remember of their comments . . "ah, so that's a lathe!".
I still can't work out how a student engineer had no idea what a lathe was . . . even better was his next question "how does it put metal back on if you make a mistake . . ."
Of course, we didn't make mistakes, so we didn't know . . .

They also have no "second sight" that allows them to see alternative value in anything .To them it's just rubbish. They only experience the 'glow' of achievement after spending money and not after reconstituting spares.
Depends on their knowledge or experience. I was amazed an engineer didn't know what a lathe was . . . but if you've never seen one, never seen anything about engineering, you wouldn't be expected to.
Equally, if you ask me how to cut and sew fabric together to make an item of clothing, something my mum, and her mum, could do, rather than me go get a "glow" of achievement after spending money on a new pair of trousers . . .
Although I don't . . . I just wear company free issue work trousers all the time

My first attempt at collage was an engineering course, spent the first 3 months in the workshop filing a bit of steel perfectly flat,
I asked when we get to play with the lathes and welders etc...
you dont was the answer.

I stopped by my local builder's supply for some 47mm wide joist hangers, and was shocked at the current price 
, so went to another builder's supply that was a bit farther away. They only had the 38mm wide size, but the price was reasonable; 90 pence each, so bought them as they are easy enough to modify. Its nothing too difficult to accomplish, but thought I'd post a few photos of an easy way to do it with excelent results.
So, I used a Jorgensen clamp mounted in a vice to bend down one side of the hanger, and flattened the crease on the anvil. I then found that a pencil I had was just the right size to use as a spacer for widening the hanger pocket. I used a second clamp to keep the jaws of the first clamp from moving while I bent the flattened side of the hanger up with a dead blow hammer. It works out well, providing a crisp 90* corner. Reforming the 30 hangers didn't take long, and saved me well over £60.oo by going to the other supplier.
