This one is really more of a 'today I installed' than today I made. Getting a non-running car or truck onto my 4 post lift has been a complete drama in the past as I am pretty well always working alone. So I've just mounted this Cheapanese 200/400KG electric hoist 'sideways on' to winch non runners up. All of the fasteners for the simple angle steel frame are resin anchored except for the top two which go right through the wall onto a big steel spreader plate.

For some reason this hoist came out of the box with less than 2 metres of cable to the remote control and only 1 metre of mains cable. I rewired it so there's about 8 metres of cable to the remote now allowing me to 'drive' up the ramp whilst sitting behind the steering wheel.

Spent an hour or so this morning making a tube clamp to slip over a piece of exercise equipment and bolt it through a wall. Love a random job.

This evening I had my first attempt at making some spindle pieces instead of swarf on the lathe.
They not super clean but they’ll do the job.

My new (to me) bike has no centre stand, don't think any of them did, so I made a little rack to pick it up if I want to change a wheel etc. It was just whatever bits of steel I had laying around. There seems to be holes for a centre stand, but nothing for the stand to rest against, when in use, and nowhere for a spring to hook either.

The stupidity of making a bike without a centre stand... otoh, the modern rider just whips his card out and gets recovered, lazy gits.

I need a lens spanner, and there's lots of dis-satisfied reviews online for the cheap ones, so...

0.6mm wide protrusion is all that engages with the retaining ring!

There's a bit of tarting up I'd like to do, but I've just read the lens I'm trying to dismantle (Canon nFD 35-105mm f/3.5) has some secret screws under the rubber grip on the zoom ring, so I might not need it after all.

I'm not 100% certain but I think it's for shearing off the little secret screws that you didn't know about when your trying to get camera lenses apart.

A bit like a minature adjustable peg spanner?

Not stupid, its not a tool you'd ever come across unless you're playing with lenses.

Here's a picture of a cheap one from eBay;


Lots of lenses have the front element (and often more inside) held in with a threaded ring with two slots of holes to engage with a tool. It's usually a big thread (67mm on the lens I'm trying to fix) so it doesn't take a lot of loctite or corrosion to stick it really solidly in place.

Finally it is where it is supposed to be, landed onto the steam engine.

Still needs painting and connecting up but that's not my job now

I thought about it but couldn't see a way of doing it.
I'm just too old and stiff and my head's too big.

Thats a fantastic repair. I know what its like now my eyes are going. I am going to have to get some short range glasses just for welding.

I hate to think how much a professional would charge to do it to that standard.
