New Mower - Petrol or Cordless

The garden has been sorted and just waiting for mother nature to turn the grass seed into a lawn. Our old corded electric mower was a disaster from new, a Bosch purchased as the EU changed maximum power outputs on mowers, vacuums etc. We are now going to replace it and want to ditch the cord so either petrol or cordless.
I have a Milwaukee cordless strimmer which is impressive but I can't justify the costs of their lawnmower (over £1k) but looking at Ego or Stihl if cordless, which work out about 60% the price of a Milwaukee. If petrol then Cobra seem to be getting good reviews, again I would be saving further with a third less than the cordless mowers and as a bonus they are now electric start so nearly as convenient.

It will be a standard rotary mower with self propulsion, no cylinder mower or roller required. What are your thoughts on cordless over petrol and do they justify the extra cost?

it depends on your garden size

for speed of cut and get on with other things its petrol, for a small garden id stick to a hover mower pull out and plug it in

hover mower with a metal blade conversion then its rake up the grass. im not a lover of the hover and its grass collection

i have one and i hate the thing so dont use it

Garden is medium/large size but also cut behind our fence that was supposed to maintained by the council but rarely is.

We had the Flymo wheeled version prior to the Bosch and that worked quite well but the lawn area will be much larger this time. The problem with the Bosch is the motor bogging down and not enough lift to get the cuttings into the collection box making it pretty much useless.

I’ve got an old 21” Masport petrol with a Briggs and Stratton motor which has served me well for a 100sqM of lawn over the past few decades.
I’ve just converted it to start with a cordless drill. Fairly easy to do, but keeping the cord pull as well was tricky.

Petrol are easier, as there's no fannying around changing/charging batteries. Where the battery ones do shine is weight. Generally lighter than petrol, so less prone to rutting the soil.

I do prefer petrol, but went with a battery one at home solely for the weight factor.

With a roller, it's a different matter. With 4 solid wheels though, it's easy to rut over time if you don't vary direction or line.

Off to Google that.

Had a Loncin engine on something else, was a brute to start. Rope eventually broke so took it off and there was a stud holding the rest of the assembly behind it. Just get a socket to fit and spin it round, just remember to spin the right way. Simples really don't know why you would want to keep the rope pull as well

There are times I'm tempted to go petrol too. I simply keep reminding myself why I went the battery route, when I'm in that frame of mind.

look about for a 1980 1990 petrol mower idealy honda but briggs at that age are good as well

id like a battery one but the petrol is so easy starts runs and can handle the longer grass if need be

new are carp mountfield einhill are china rubish last 2 to 5 years before they inplode if you know what your doing you can get a few years more out of them
but wont find one of them in my garden cutting my grass cheaper and better 2nd stuff out there that will last years

I'd have one if I though it could cope with the slope on my garden.

Ive been looking at these…..Id need 2 as cottages and our garden separate….due to advice from local dealer whom I trust……buy cheap buy twice. But they need a half decent lawn, not too steep, and don't cut up against a wall. So Id still need to strim the edges now and then. Plus a trench for the cable for 1 would be required…..across water main, and shed cable….

So decision made if new plug and quick service of-the 15 year old mountfield. Using run to failure strategy doesnt work, Ill just replace it, with the honda powered new one.

I did investigate goin* all sthil battery, but for a saw, stone saw, strimmer, mower was eye wateringly expensive!

I only my second Honda petrol rotary mower. Just put new deck and serviced the one I got.

I also got an Allen 446 Hovertrim for the sloped bits I got - this too got a Honda engine in it - not long bought this - replaced an aging two stroke petrol Flymo (the gross polluter).

I very Honda or nothing now for lawnmowers...

I don't know why our old mower has lasted so well. It's not like I look after it. We inherited it about 15yrs ago and it was old then. It was red and is petrol with a Briggs engine, so might be a mountfield. I'd get another over a new one. Or, if I had the lawn to suit, an old Suffolk punch, just because.
