I think I should make a QC clutch, just open the hood, unbolt a cover on the bellhousing, reach in, slip out the old, and just like a LP, slide in a new clutch....

The Datsun Sunny (iirc) had that. 30 minutes to change the clutch and that was the first one, never having seen that before.

I've read that many purely electric car owners are finding them more expensive to run/charge to run than petrol or diesel cars due to the price of electricity...

Were on our third EV and they are cheaper to run and fuel. Diesel/petrol prices went up with Leccy. EVs have no exhaust, clutch, injectors, ignition etc. and fewer moving parts.

My neighbour covers his EV usage with solar panels, but he's a tight assed retired Yorkshire man who uses little household power and doesn't travel far. He has about 4kW of panels and gets between 10 and 30kWh a day this time of year.

Yep, first of the front wheel drive Datsuns…badged as a Datsun/ Nissan Pulsar in the Southern Hemisphere. Think a couple of manufacturers did it, Vauxhall/ Opel being another, after the Leyland /Austin Mini being the first car I saw that you could quickly replace the clutch without pulling the gearbox out. Think some of the Renaults also were like that, possibly Renault 6? Probably went out of fashion when they realised they would lose out on billable hours for clutch replacements. Stand to be corrected, but I don’t think any cars this century have had the feature

IIRC, Volvo did a study and worked out that the carbon break even point for one of their EV's was 60,000 miles. This was based on a mix of charging using fossil, nuclear and renewables

well the way modern cars go, i mean cars with all the electric rubbish/sensors etc etc are total rubbish and a waste of money. If they were good you should be bale to plug a car in to a OBD reader and get the fault without going through half a dozen problems going pot luck on if you get it.

My 2006 Viv is bad enough but easy towards a lot. I just wish i could afford a proper car 30 years old

electric cars/hybrid which ever i will never own or will want to. they cant make decent cars with engines and senors so god help them . I blame it on folk wanting all mod cons in cars and being lazy and cant drive. auto light and wipers, i mean come on WTF is going on.

Toledo you sit in the passenger seat to change the clutch from the inside

with a BMW mini we had problems with we ad taken it to four garages, two being mini specialist and........well after spending over £800 on repairs to try to find the fault, and to no avail we sold it as is as it was getting stupid. you should be able tp plug a car in and find the fault first go, no messing with could be this or that.

if someone wanted to give me £30k to get a new EV, I'd consider it, bearing in mind that I've been driving the same two cars for the last 20 years and they cost me £1000 each), but as I drive less than 2000 miles a year the cost of running my old cars is significantly cheaper than getting a new electric car.
its a bit like my old central heating boiler, I'd have keep my old one of the heat exchanger hadn't gone, while the running costs are much cheaper, the cost of a new boiler outweighs the savings in efficiency.

You can put in-roof EV panels up which aren't an eyesore at all. Or you can build a car port and cover that with EV panels.

12x 400w panels = 4.8kWp on there
1.2 more than the average UK roof install.

ohh Ive got a car port, dont think the solar panels would be in place for more than a few days before someone pinched them, at least on a roof, they are harder to get to.

I know what you mean. I've been working on a voltage regulator for an older car (1937) today. Fortunately I struck lucky and found the problem, a broken brass contact strip, quite quickly.

86 years old and it's already failed ! Fit for purpose?

I just see it as if modern cars are meant to be so good and have ability to show so many fault codes to show and so may sensors then it should be easy to diagnose the problem direct, otherwise whats the point, its all guessing if the tech fitted cant do it.

I used to love working on cars but more tech makes it expensive tan it needs to be.

There is a second hand EV market but as its largely new tech then the older stuff is very limited in range.

I did consider getting a very old Nissan Leaf for pootling about locally in but I need something that can tow. So, although our primary car is a newish Leaf EV, as soon as the Ranger's lease is up this September, I'll be getting a used Subaru estate as our utility car.

Reasons are, 4WD, low box in some, plenty of room for the tip run, can tow enough for my needs and a neighbour has a Subaru specialist garage so he can pick up and drop it off after service and MOT.

I'm sick of hanging around Ford service centres while they fix the Ranger.

What do these kids average ? 30k miles on a clutch ?

Let's not even try to cornfuse them with double clutching, and no clutch driving.

It's like the age old which came first ,the chicken or the egg. In this case were the uncalled for mods incorporated BECAUSE of the lack of driving technique or did they CAUSE the lack. Or was it just to enable the manufacturer to save a few quid or to give the dealers a reason to make a few quid?
