Well, working on them, anyway, and the spares....

The Old Crock (20 year old Honda Accord) clutch went straight to the floor, empty reservoir and after trying to vacuum bleed, mate and his YL dropped in and offered a hand - so he was able to spot the twin fountains of fluid while YL pedalled and i closed the bleed nipple...
The master cyl on the honda has a triangular cover over a diaphragm that's supposed to make the clutch easier - it doesn't but it does let the O-ring pop out and leak everywhere!
Replaced the m Cyl, not a job I'd choose to repeat (on my back in the footwell, door sill in the kidneys reminded me I'm not a teenager any more) but exercised my vocabulary! MC fixing nut you need 18"+ of 1/4" extensions to get to doesn't help much, either
One in, vacuum bed again, pushed down on the clutch and... O-ring popped out of the new one.
Close look at the one I took out, the triangular cover plate (with 3 bolts) is a flat as a camels back, nearly 1//2mm gaps between the bolts, explains it... I had a look on a few Honda forums (the MC is common on other Hondas too) and it's a well-known design fault and Honda updated the design - so why are the motor factors selling the bloomin' things???

I've lapped the plate off the old one flat, who knows, it might hold pressure on the new MC...

What have you been doing with all that money your saving up, instead of making new car payments ?

think the clutch might have a longer life expectancy than a battery for an electric car though (all dependant on driving style though)

I know what you mean. I've been working on a voltage regulator for an older car (1937) today. Fortunately I struck lucky and found the problem, a broken brass contact strip, quite quickly.

well the way modern cars go, i mean cars with all the electric rubbish/sensors etc etc are total rubbish and a waste of money. If they were good you should be bale to plug a car in to a OBD reader and get the fault without going through half a dozen problems going pot luck on if you get it.

My 2006 Viv is bad enough but easy towards a lot. I just wish i could afford a proper car 30 years old

electric cars/hybrid which ever i will never own or will want to. they cant make decent cars with engines and senors so god help them . I blame it on folk wanting all mod cons in cars and being lazy and cant drive. auto light and wipers, i mean come on WTF is going on.

The tweaker/tuners around here with the loud pipes.....I can clearly tell that they can't drive stick...
"mind the clutch" springs to mind.
Endless slipping, even when upshifting.

I think I should make a QC clutch, just open the hood, unbolt a cover on the bellhousing, reach in, slip out the old, and just like a LP, slide in a new clutch....

What do these kids average ? 30k miles on a clutch ?

Let's not even try to cornfuse them with double clutching, and no clutch driving.

The Vauxhall Cavalier was not far off that, bottom off the bell housing, pull out a small driveshaft & unbolt clutch. Easy job, then the replacement, the Vectra had no plate on the bottom, progress? Going on from this, a long time ago, a friend asked me to do a clutch on an NSU Prinz, one of the sporty ones. I asked about how to do it & all I got was much sucking through teeth & told to leave it alone. When I had a good look at it, you removed a plug from the bell housing cover, pulled out a little drive shaft, removed a huge spring clip from the flywheel & the diaphragm & plate came out. 20 minutes & I was putting the tools away.

New cars are a complete waste of money in this country.
A new electric car would most definitely be a downgrade from a 20 year old car, and worse for the environment too.

They also have to join the rest of us in a couple of years, paying for the tax! I doubt that they will be exempt from Khan't's proposal for pay by the mile too, should that ever come to fruition.

I don't believe for a second that would be acceptable regarding the carbon footprint. Do you know how weighty that is considering the batteries alone?

Maybe things are different in the US but, as others here would seem to concur, purely electric cars are not working - not at the moment anyway.

Hybrid cars are a different matter.

But they have a C-L-U-T-C-H.....

How would weight be a problem ? many people are converting.
And why would removing a hydrocarbon engine, and making it electric NOT appease the green crowd ? Even greener then scrapping and buying all new.

Hybrid, jack of all trades and master of none, electric apparently having to wait for up to 2 hours at a motorway service station during busy periods is now a “thing” who could be arsed with that? I’ll stick to my internal combustion engines and leave the electric to the next generation.

I was working with a young girl not long ago, she thought that I was being irresponsible for driving a diesel X5, when I pointed out that the the 2 brand new cars that she and her boyfriend rent on PCP deals and get replaced every three years was having a significantly worse effect on the environment than me buying a second hand diesel, she shut her gobby gob after that.

You did well to get the point across, usually when I've tried to make the case for the environmental benefit of owning an older vehicle, you just get the "yeah, but no but yeah but no" denial routine.

You may hate cars, but like myself the hatred you feel for you vehicle is far less than that of opening your wallet and paying someone else to do the work.
Unfortunately hate is such a broad scale these days, like you can have a bit of hate for something, but lots of hate for something else. I am almost at the point of despising getting underneath my heap of junk and scraping it through its annual inspection, but I actually despise the thought of having to part with cash to buy something else, so I’ve only got my tight fisted self to blame
