Cost of galvanising

Just had a letter from my local galvanisers,their second price increase this year,the zinc surcharge is increasing 16.5% per tonne of steelwork ,from 11th April .
I’m sure many jobs are going to be put on hold with such volatility of materials.

We were constantly fighting it at the engineering company I work for temporarily. Steel and Galv prices were rising so sharply we changed to your quote is only valid for a week instead of 30 days and even then on some jobs we were struggling to make a profit with only a week between quote and ordering the steel if we got the go ahead.

Got a quote from Aalco for aluminium sheet few weeks ago, they were only honouring the quote for 24 hours, obviously to prevent getting their fingers burnt in the event of sudden price rises.

Stupid since we can mine our own zinc in this very country

Exactly this,these last couple of years must cause reforms in industrial research and production processes.
It’s often only cheaper to buy it in for certain periods of time,these have changed recently worldwide.

2.8kg weight and £20 each. 25x3 mild

First time getting anything galvanised and sounds a bit steep. you agree on todays rates ?

But is that for a one off, or for a big batch?

For a one off, it seems pretty cheap - for one in a batch of say 100, it's seems extortionate.

So how is thay worked. Per weight of item. Or galv used as its usually around 7% of item.weight.

I asked for 10 off to be done and they said £20.each.

I think you must be a victim of their buggerance or minimum order value, I would have thought £5 max. try elsewhere.

I’d try a local fabricator who uses them, but on a bigger scale than you. Get him to put your stuff through with his batch.

Even if he adds a healthy chunk on for his trouble it still won’t be £20 an item.

I think Bob is right, if you can find a local friendly fabricator to send them in with their work would probably be the only way to get it cheaper. I am on £876/ tonne currentl.

I used to build a batch of launching trollies for dinghies once in a while, used to get them done at Rayleigh, He retired & packed it in.
last lot i had done at South east galvanisers at Witham a few years back, they obviously didnt want small batch orders & it was bloody steep then.
I hate to think what they would charge today, probably cheaper to make them out of stainless!

That would make more sense, at 87.6p a kilo those frames would come in at less than a fiver.

That’s more like it. I was paying 63p just before Covid so 87 is about right

I wouldnt have a clue but Id pay £20.00 for them to be galvanised, you couldnt get a decent paint job on them for £20.00 with your time/materials
