Chainsaws, what to get?

As these 2t petrols are relatively simple is there any reason not to get a top handle saw and make up a swappable rear handle assembly for safe use on the ground, then put back to standard for climbing when Im ready for it?

Just realised that the Katsu is a top handle. Not supposed to like those.

Tried the baby saw. I am quite impressed, it has a lot more power than I expected!

I wouldn't, the chain brakes are questionable. And normally won't activate with inertia

Stihl do the 201 as both top and rear handle. They did the same with the 200 and farmertec do a copy of the 200. Farmertec seems to be fairly well regarded in America with various forums listing where to use OEM parts from the outset. Whereas the generic Chinese stuff is a complete unknown.

This toy sized mini saw arrived today. Thought it would beat hedge trimmer or silky for stuff like the Russian Vine I was clearing from a fence last week.

I expect it will need a motor upgrade to be any use. The motor is tiny. For anything solid Im certain a silky will be quicker.

I am not going to recommend a brand but it is important to consider spares and back up if you intend running it for a few years. If you have a local dealer/stockist of a certain reputable make you may have an easier time getting spares or repairs. Just saying.

Don't think you can go far wrong with Stihl for this kind of stuff.. I didn't actually buy it, but I'm the one who uses it, a farm type place I do work for got a moderate size Stihl and it's been excellent, always a good starter with no sodding about, and serviceable for parts etc.

A bit hard on the rapid recharging of battery packs, plus the trees it contacts will generally need the attention of larger petrol powered chainsaw...fairly soon after.

I've never handled a 200 were did you order it from Direct from Farmertec or another site?

Another reason for getting a well known brand of saw' milled a 7ft long 28/35 inch wide Ash with a 1998 Stihl 61cc saw never missed a beat, I bought it second hand overhauled the carb and replaced the worn clutch when I got it, OEM parts are easy to get.

I have 2 top handles, a Husky 335 and a 338, I purchased the 338 new, 335 s/hand.

There is no legal reason why a person cannot purchase a brand new top handle saw for private use on his own property, the saw shops will tell you (under H&S guidelines) that you need a certification to purchase one, this is total bull***?

Whilst there may be no legal reason you cannot buy one there is also no legal reason why any shop is obliged to serve you either so you don't win either way.

Never had a problem always had a 6 Kva genny in my service van, for charging flat batteries on mewps, power tools, an Aldi v2 compressor for air tools/tyres, 140 amp inverter welder and sometimes a small chainsaw to cut up wood for dunage and packing when working on large machines.

A totally self-contained service van, sometimes a tad over weight maybe...

How do you get on cutting wood up on site with a chainsaw?

Assuming you’ve got the ppe and tickets they still get a bit twitchy about them.

It’s probably easier there than trying to use one on forestry ground, we had our saws taken from us a few years back. To high a risk using chainsaws, we’re a forestry company ffs.

At least yours has a top guard over the blade, unlike mine. As I said I pushed mine too hard and cooked the brushed motor:
