Thanks, I'll look for rear handle saws then and wait until I have more experience for a top handle.

So then, whats a good, light, small, rear handle chainsaw?
I think I prefer cordless.

Stihl, echo, husky same for petrol.


Though I've had success with holzforma/farmertec (Chinese clones) possibly not recommended, i know what to swap out and buy them for the fun of assembling them and tuning them.

Nothing wrong with a silky saw Peter, most climbers have one on their harness.Can still inflict quite a serious injury if you get sloppy.

Hayesmachinery have a video on their YouTube all about battery saws. Very informative. Our org returned all the battery saws as they weren’t at the time up to long time usage unless you had a van of batteries. At the moment id go petrol.

I have a stihl battery saw and it's a great wee saw for up to about 6 inch thick stuff. Needs to be kept well sharp .

They just don't sound right to me, it looks too back end heavy, plus all my cordless tools just seem to die instantly when the battery goes flat with very very little warning, half through a cut the saw stops, no thanks.

I can always pull the fuel tank cap and see what's left in the tank.

All modern battery kit has a battery level indicator. And even modern tools get sluggish before they stop. You just have to use the tool enough to know it.

I consider myself a heavy home user but certainly not commercial use.

I’ve gone Makita for battery chainsaws. The newer XGT range is great. IMO Makita batteries are a significant step-up from DeWalt, Milwaukee etc. I’ve stuck with traditional battery tool manufacturers because of the all round use, the above three all have a great range of tools.

I love using my battery saws, light, quite, easy and efficient. The top handle is great but on the ground I will always grab the rear handle.
However I also now enjoy my petrol saws more. I can use them when I really need too, rather than using a heavy 70cc saw with a few foot of steel to swing about, just to cut smaller stuff.
Yes I could buy small petrol saws but imo, worst of both worlds nowadays.

Im eagerly awaiting a 80V twin XGT rear handle, I’m guessing anything below a 550 will be redundant.

Battery level indicators are just that an indicator only.
My old Dewalt drill, grinder and impact nut gun were brilliant tools let down by poor battery life in the end. Yes old school Dewalt cordless tools but even my new
Milwaukee cordless tools still suffer from batteries that seem to die quickly, towards the end of the batteries capacity.
I can stand a battery drill/screw driver going flat, because another battery is always on charge, or the kettle is calling but I wouldn't want to be half way through dropping a limb of a tree and the saw stops.

Petrol powered is my preferred choice, it only takes a couple of minute's to re-fuel/oil a saw.

When Stihl and Husqvarna start selling battery powered MS881/3120XP chainsaws, then maybe battery powered saws have arrived...imho.

That post honestly makes no sense. The battery indicator works in the same way as checking the fuel tank it tells you how much juice is left.
And if it is such a precious cut that you are re fuelling a petrol saw beforehand then then it takes no more time to swap out batteries.
For small kit then batteries are the way to go for just about everything. It's only for heavy prolonged use that petrol still has the edge.
You would be amazed how many tree gangs are now carrying a battery top handle now.
Gardeners with battery hedge cutters strimmers and blowers. And builders with battery disc cutters.

Battery also has the advantage that you don't have to choose between it being running and ready or being able to hear yourself.

Mate of mine in Norwich who has a medium size tree outfit cannot tender for certain contracts now unless he has battery tools.

I can see phyiscally how much fuel is left in the tank, as a vehicle/plant mechcanic (incl forklifts and mewp's), I've learnt over the years not to trust fuel gauges, liquid and especially electric gauges. I can't see electric...

Beyond that it's knowing your tools. As long as you know your tools there is zero problem.

That's probably why most of my power tools are mains powered, or diesel/petrol.
