Kuga Brakes Issue

Jack it up and see if they drag with no power on. My bike front calipers dragged a fair but, and a good clean around the pistons with brake cleaner sorted that out. They don't actually have rubber bellows around each piston, but they're some black material. I worked them in and out a bit as I cleaned and they were good after.

Most abs systems still operate a diagonally split. Master cylinder has two outputs to the abs unit, one feeds each circuit,

It still uses a diagonal split with the ability to control each wheel independently,

I read it wrong. It's either going to be the abs unit or the master cylinder. I'd drive it again and then crack one of the bleed nipples and that should confirm there's pressure in the circuit, then give it another drive and crack the pipe at the master cylinder, if there's pressure at the pipe at the master cylinder then the master cylinder is holding pressure, if there's no pressure at the master cylinder then it's the abs unit holding the pressure.
Another thing I've seen happen once is a pipe between a master cylinder and an abs unit partially blocked with corrosion.

Might wait while weather eases. On short runs no problem. It's when things warm up that it starts. Same as 18months ago with rear calipers. All hoses are 2009 so might be worth buying a some new ones. I'll have a look on line.

probably just a good old sticking caliper ,,, and coincidence its two at once ,,, really just one and a half , but once you notice one the other leaps out at you ,, maybe just a strip and clean will get you going again ,, and I know thats easy to say if your doing it yourself and all it costs is time ,,,, if you have to pay for that its a couple of hours and maybe nothing to show , or a very short term fix ...
if you are not the diy type , find a mate who is and bribe him with buns and tea ,,, brakes are not the place to start learning on your own even with a you tube video.

I've been doing my own car maintenance nearly 60 years. But body (mine not car) is letting me down nowadays. ABS is a bit specialised, but the mechanical bits have hardly changed. No asbestos now.Don't mind paying a fair and skilful garage. It's finding one. Got sick of correcting them when they start BS'ing.
A Kwik-Thick-Fitter nearly killed me when he bodged the brakes, bit nasty coming over the pennines at Holmfirth!
My very 1st car was a brand new Ford Capri (70's). The high jinxes that the stealership got up to was unreal. They ended up in court and closed down. Not my doing, though I wish it was.
From then on it was DIY and workshop manuals and 1st MIG set. A tale I'm sure a lot on here will recognise.

The basic braking system has to be a dual circuit (tandem master cylinder) to meet braking standards, so if one wheel circuit fails, you don't lose all brakes.
In it's unpowered state, the ABS module should just act as a couple glorified T-pieces, splitting the two input circuits to the 4 wheels.

When active, and modulating brakes, the ABS can release and pressurise each wheel circuit individually.
TC is just an expansion of that, whereby it can pressurise and release each circuit individually without any pressure on the input circuits.

85000 is low mileage for a 14 year old car, it's entirely possible it's just sticky calipers not getting enough use. Could also be the pads are sticking on the mounts or slider pins are dry. Many places are in such a hurry these days they don't think to check stuff like that. I changed some pads on a car a couple of weeks back where one side was completely worn away and the other had loads of meat. Both caliper pistons were fine but on the side that hadn't worn the pads were literally jammed on the mounts and didn't move. Strange thing is the person who replaced them previously had done a nice job but using proper brake grease on the backs of the pads and where they touched the mounts. Clearly hadn't cleaned the rust off the mount though

I have never supplied so many brake calipers in my working career since hand car washes came about.

electric handbrakes and automatics are a deadly combination for killing rear calipers ,,,

I'm sure it doesn't help that most cars these days are so over equipped in the braking department hey never get a good workout

I actually make a point of sliding mine about in the frost , when theres nothing else about to make the abs and traction work a bit ,,, bound to do it some good ,,

Did lube the slider pins (very expensive grease) on the rear calipers and cleaned the contact points and a smear of copper slip. But car's had very little use. Tend to get everything delivered. Over winter hibernation (me). Could well be pads sticking. The non genuine ones had to be eased off as they were a tight fit. As I said earlier it's the diagonal pattern that is a concern. Hopefully just coincidence? Been fine for almost 2 years.
Good weather forecast today so will investigate. Hate doing this s**t in winter.

NB: When the ABS module failed it took the speedometer out so it became illegal to drive. Lot more in it other than just brakes. It has an oil pump in it also which pulses. Flagged up as comms error with 'Forscan'. I can reset error codes and function test most stuff.

Thanks. Reasurring. Do you mean people actually wash cars? Think I can safely rule that out as possible cause. I personally hand wash it maybe twice a year.
Think it only gets a long run for hospital appointments... 2 last week each a 70mile round trip.

Yes had that. As you say lazy garages don't lube pins or check gaiters. Twin cylnders didn't suffer with that issue. 30 yrs + ago I bought an old Triumph 2,000 mk1 that had been stood for many many years and pistons wouldn't retract because of the build up of rust mush in cylinders. Tyres were like 50pence pieces.
Brake fluid doesn't get changed like it should.

I bought a 130i and it had a very good service history , but I did a service myself when I got it as I always do , top spec oil etc ,,,, low and behold the brake / clutch reservoir was contaminated with a soft wax like substance , but it was only on the out side of the reservoir internal filter , so I syringed it out and flushed the system through and its been no bother , but Ive never seen the contamination before ,,, maybe its been topped up wiith the wrong bottle or whatever , but it shows you there can be all sorts going on
long gone are the days of putting sixpences on the slave cylinders to make up for drum wear.
