Kitchen worktop cutting

Mrs Robo has picked a composite plastic worktop for the new kitchen, looking at a sample it's quite dense/heavy and I'm guessing made with plastic, heat and pressure?

I've downloaded the installation guide and it looks like normal power tools will work, but I wondered if anyone on here has first hand experience working with it, any hints or tips appreciated.

Possibly the most important thing with such surfaces is to cut it so the teeth enter the finished side.*

If the teeth exit the finished side, you will get tear out.

Even with that advice, put a strip of masking tape on it as insurance.

* that is physically impossible at a bull nose edge, so take special care there.

I bottled using it, in our cottages, couldnt find anyone whod used it to tell me how to get good joints.

For best results. Tracksaw and router.
Or jigsaw/skillsaw to remove bulk and route

Seam setters are helpful if you have them.

New sharp router bits.

Minimum 40 tooth TCT blade.

Decent quality sharp tools, standard woodworking stuff.

I prefer aluminium circular saw blades for cutting up

No sharp corners or ragged edges on cutouts

Minimum 6mm internal radius

All edges should be finished with a router ideally so there are no nicks that can act as stress risers

Use the correct adhesives

Use pure ipa and white lint free towels to clean immediately before applying adhesive


Other than being a plastic material it's no different to wood really

Finishing use a da sander down to about 400-600 grit

Personally I find downcut blades more trouble than they are worth... and a slight chip on the cut edge isn't a problem as you need to finish it with a router anyway

Seam setters are handy but you can glue offcuts underneath and use worktop bolts or clamps as well ...

My dad's fitted lots of TRESPA work surfaces (Which is probably the same thing), he uses a fine TCT blade in a circular saw, cuts it fine but it's slow going.
