Got these in the post today - seem to be all the rage at the moment, and as I was considering a set of engineer screw extraction pliers, I thought I'd give these a go instead.

I'm a knipex fan, but must admit I'm slightly disappointed with the quality of the end grind on these. Its a bit on the ****.
I guess I can hit it with the belt sander and square it up but feel I really shouldn’t have to for the price.
Otherwise they seem nice though.

What is the correct way to handle a file? I assume heating the tang before insertion risks ruining the temper.

That tang should not be hardened. Anyway, I drill a hole up into the handle which the end of the tang will just fit into. Then I drill another hole over the first to half the length of the tang, at a size the tang would just fit into at half length. Then I put the handle onto the tang, tap it on with a mallet then I bang the tang down on the bench (file vertical) so the weight of the file sets the tang into the hole.

Refitting wooden handles to files etc.

Warm the tang to dull red. Pour powder sulpher into exsisting hole.
Push handle on to tang.
It will smoke.
Allow to cool.

No sulpher?
Heat to cherry red.
Then push handle on, past old whittnes mark
Allow to cool.

New handles.
Should come with a drilled hole to suit the file etc.
Many do not.

Measure the smallest width of the tang, minus 10% and drill and hole to the depth of the tang, minus 10%.
Do this 4 times, by dividing the tang into 4 lengtths.
This will give youy a steped hole into the handle.

Heat tang toi cherry red and force handle onto hot tang.
Allow to cool.





Or by a taper drill.
Drill handle.
Using 2 pack glue flood hole and ram handle on.

I've got a load that need handles too...think I'll order up some handles.

My plan was to score the tang and then use epoxy to put the handles on...logic being that the next time the handle needed to come off would be if it was busted anyway. Any reason this is a terrible idea?

Congrats, it is the begging of a journey. Mines a bit battered but it can help to get a job I am MIET but a little too old to go for CEng now.

I'm not sure. I've always assumed the temporary/permanent status was down to individual preference? I'd personally prefer permanent.

Our new facilty issues toolboxes to fitters . . . so when I was over there, I was using tools from the toolbox assigned to the job . . . many files, one handle. When I asked the manager if they forgot, or someone stole them, I was told they only issue one and you have to swap it from file to file.

I pointed out that the files different files have different tangs, and when someone shoves a tang though their hand, they'll lose working time for him, and whoever drives him to A&E, costing way more than a pack of handles for everyone.

I suggested it was silly money saving idea from someone sat in an office.

Aforementioned, office chair dwelling, manager still isn't currently replying to my emails . . .

My previous employer paid my IMechE fees. Sometimes funny to pull the card from inside my boiler suit when climbing out of some tank or machine to reveal I outranked someone being annoying . . .

But the current one doesn't, so for 20 yrs I've not been a member. Not affected me at all, other than not having to spend time proving I was maintaining "continued professional development" - if they still require such a thing.

Ability to do the job is the most important - I know a few CEngs, some rather full of themselves, most of whom would take the most complex, time consuming, most expensive, most likely to fail, way to do something, having proven with many many pages of FEA, analysis etc it was the best possible way. I'm currently fixing a load of issues one of them caused before moving on to another employer.

Don't fall into that trap - keep it real

A load more firewood - missus' horse knocked over an admittedly rather dilapidated fence in the old tennis court so it was time to refence. When I made a start a neighbour asked if I could take down the ash that had been hit by dieback that was right above their poly-tunnel. Really didn't need more work added but far easier to do it now rather than before the fence went up.

Also ordered myself one of these - makes tensioning the wire a toddle. Historically used vice-grips on the top and bottom stand. Yes I could have made one and in some instances I'm wishing I had - but didn't really have the time now that some of the paint has been scratched off it the bolts are a bit easier going in and out (couldn't be bothered to find a tap + die to clean up the threads) - I suspect they'd just chucked all the bits into a paint bath.

Not too bad going for half a days work on my own - one tree down. Yes I will probably clean up the stump but I've had a habit recently of the moment a new sharp chain is on the saw I immediately hit a nail and/or stone embedded in the wood so played it safe and stayed above where the old fence had been up against it. Once instance this morning where the battery Husky didn't like the cold as the saw kept stalling out and flashing an alert on the batteries - still got the job done on the initial felling (had the 110's winch attached to the tree and wanted the to use the battery one so I could hear the tree beginning to go - just playing it safe with the polytunnel down below). Once it was on the ground the big petrol one came out for chogging it up. Leaving it to the missus and the little one to collect the wood tomorrow . Well they did spend today shoe-shopping and at a party. Little one enjoyed it - not sure the missus did .

You're worth investing in yourself , though many people think they aren't and so have a lower earning capability throughout their working lives . These days unless you want to end up on minimum income state benefits all your life you have to wake up to doing the work, possibly funding it yourself .

SIL came back to the UK after spending almost 16 years abroad with her about to be discharged disabled soldier hubby , having no qualifiactions other than ambition & a decent brain aged 36 she first worked as a dishwasher in a hospital , did Open University , became a cordon bleu chef did the major catering control in the hospital . Gained a degree with honours in management aged 43 managing five hospitals service groups in the same authority and retired at 60 from the health board on a golden pension & a shed load of sensible investments and a good pension pot . Talking to her a while ago she said she's reaping the benefits of what she sowed all those years ago & is thoroughly enjoying life without financial worries.
