We have two 'Dog Friendly Holiday Cottages' meaning tiled floors, private safe court yard and acres of fields for walks. AND I reckon people with dogs make better guests - they care for something other than just themselves,

Rickets, my granny was always saying things like "he wouldn't stop a pig in a passage"

Corporal punishment that was handed out casually and frequently at school

Large dollops of malt and cod liver oil.

One bog in the house, and usually in the bathroom so you either waited or gassed the occupant or visa versa.

The ever changing combined radiogram/cocktail cabinet that was full of miniature spirit bottles that had had their contents swapped for water or tea years ago.

Angel delight, prawn cocktails and those packet chow main dinners with crispy noodles that never quite all cooked leaving rock hard bits.

The HP guy who came around every week so you could pay off the cost of the telly or twin tub.

Thick aggressive coppers shipped in from Essex who would clog your front door down and march in without a warrant looking for a striking miner, even though your dad was a fork lift truck driver at the glass works.

I think I prefer today.

School nights spent with all the other kids down the working men's club. Loitering outside whilst Mum played bingo and Dad either hogged the bar with his cronies or retired to the darts/snooker committee room.

Every so often popping to the bar, for a sip of Dad's mild and bitter and to get another Woodpecker cider which back then was considered a soft drink! No wonder I did **** at school!

Buying beer/cider kits from Boots from about 11 onwards, no questions asked. Then brewing and drinking it. Selling it to mates at 10p a Corona lemonade bottle full.

Holiday's in the UK at a caravan of someone down the club or staying in a pub/private club where M&D were locum landlords. Finding the working men's club wherever we were on holiday.

Collecting glasses at wherever.

A stream of ladies coming to the house for evening dress fitting and passing Mum pins.

Where did that lot suddenly come from and why am I welling up?

We had a pub up the road that had a small hatch that you could access without going in the pub (in a passageway just through the main door), as a kid we used to get sent up to change pop bottles which the landlord used to do. The smell of fags and booze when he opened that hatch was intoxicating as a youngster, I blame that for me spending far too much of my youth in pubs!!!
