selection of basic wood working tools needed (gift)

I'm stating early... my gf fancies some basic wood working tools for valentines day so she can fix up old furniture

she wants to restore it to be used, non of this upcycling/paint stuff

she has no experience at anything like that, no tools at all, I think she's keen to learn


I'm trying to think of what to get her, so far I can think of...

small random orbital sander + sanding disks
selection of sand paper
selection of paint brushes for varnishing
few screw drivers
glue?
selection box of nails and screws


I'm wondering about varnishes and wood fillers but guess she'll need to get those to match colours etc.?

Mask. Or at least extraction for sanders.
Scrapers. Both push and pull.
Heat gun?
Fillers.
Decent wood glue to make filler from sawdust and for repairs.

Decent small screwdriver set for cabinet hinges.

Pins nails screws.

Wax. For repairs and beeswax for drawer runners.

That's one reason I never throw old screws away. Great for matching up.

Have a look at the carbide scrapers such as the ones by bahco - they make removal of surface finishes about a million times easier than conventional scrapers.

Best I've found are these.

the large one for big large work and the smaller one for detail and smaller stuff

Looks similar to the Hamilton I posted above

The linbide blade is 50mm wide. An advantage on flat surfaces.
Use them to strip doors windows and frames but also useful for removing tile grout from walls etc.

The blades are basically interchangeable, the Hamilton ones just slightly smaller, but significantly cheaper!

Does the bacho have a curve and a point blade to go with the triangle. That was why I grabbed that one. Helps when cleaning out mouldings.
Useful if it does.

It just comes with the triangle, others are available I believe, but the Hamilton ones seem to be easier and cheaper to get hold of - so I just bought those instead.
Had some quality issues with a couple of the Bahco ones, so if I was buying again I might be swayed towards going for the Hamilton from the get go. Although the handle does feel very comfortable on the Bahco.
Either way I was seriously impressed by the amount of work they can do and the speed for given their size.

I would also add a set of wood chisels, tack lifter, nail puller, pin hammer, files, wood rasp and a cabinet scraper

I could go on some more……

I’ve repaired, recycled and reupholstered quite a lot of old furniture, including a Parker knoll chair done on modern fabrics and paint

Good suggestions by others in this thread...

But just to get things started, how about trying a targeted approach?

For example, have her select a specific piece of furniture that she'd like to restore/repair. Any piece of used furniture could have its own unique issues that might be best solved with a specific set of tools or materials. You could start by buying the tools and supplies that are appropriate for restoring that particular piece of furniture.

If you match specific furniture problems to specific tool solutions, she'll have a better chance of success on her first restoration/repair attempt. The next piece of furniture could have different tool requirements, meaning adding more tools to her collection.

Be forewarned: That's how tool addiction can start. When we first got married, my wife's entire tool 'kit' was a cheap hammer, pliers, and two screwdrivers. Now, she has her own section of the workshop that I'm not allowed to clutter up, which is populated by a pretty decent collection of her own hand and power tools. She has also taken over the sun room for her painting and most of the garden shed as well. I don't mind, however, since she now understands my tool habit, and instead of rolling her eyes when I buy a tool, she smiles, and sometimes asks to borrow it.

PS: Make sure you include a tool box.
