Grounding ECU harness and sensors?

As above, I'd be buying a 2nd hand wiring harness and stripping it down.

You may end up being able to re-use half of it at least.

The factory crimps can be used as pig tails.

Deutsch connectors are really good if you need to easily de-pin a connector (for passing loom through small holes etc), I will be using some when re-looming the Golf.

Any where your loom will flex you need to avoid solder joints as the solder will fracture the wire, Crimp And Seal with the proper tool is the way forward there.

Cable management is your top priority, nice and secure and no chance of the loom rubbing though on chassis etc due to vibration.

A lot of my time at work is spent repairing looms and some of the routing of motorcycle looms is just daft, KTM'S commonly fracture the wiring near the headstock just because of how it's routed.

Can you extract the terminals out of the original connector? See if you can then get new terminals and rewire the original. If you can get the sizes I may have some here in my stash that you can gladly have.

Yes, they should all go to ground at the same point. Otherwise is it possible to get mV of PD between them, which can give the ECU a confusing signal.

+1 for common earth point.

I order a lot from them - very helpfull company.

Reckon we have an order about every 14-21days from them.

Screened cable of however many cores you need. I made my own when I rebuilt my Scorpio loom. Take apart some decent, digital standard TV coax and retrieve the foil and braid to use in your loom. Tape up with fabric tape or self amalgamating. Leave a twisted end that you can connect to ONE END not both.

What's the benefit of making your own screened cable?

So the cable is just "screened", it's not like antenna cable that comes in different impedances and other things I don't understand?

Benefits are manyfold, a) no money needs to be spent, b) you can make it whatever length or core number you wish, c) you know that the screen is real copper and not CCA (unless you use crap like RG6 for the screen). D is the satisfaction of being able to get on with the job, not having to trawl through online catalogues of suppliers who probably don't have it anyway!

Impedances matter at RF, not for what you are trying to do.

In another thread someone mentioned using conduit. I'm tempted to give it a go. My only doubt is how difficult it will be to add more wires to it as I'm currently only doing the ECU wiring to get the car moving. The rest of the wiring will need to be added later.

What do people think of this non-split conduit with fittings?

I wouldn't. Wrap your loom in fabric tape just like modern cars. Like this...

Just use the usual non adhesive vinyl tape and cover it with this for abrasion

I guess the conduit is just trouble and makes the loom non serviceable?

Bulky, dirt trap, difficult to service and looks like you have been smoking something that you really shouldn't. All in my personal opinion of course.

If you want nice conduit parts that are still serviceable go to a breakers and split a VW/Audi harness, I did a couple of few years ago and got some lovely bits, its all split conduit but with nice Ts, Ys, reducers etc it can make for a really neat job.

I use Tessa Tape for looms, good quality fabric tape.

As for the O2 sensor make sure if you alter the actual loom out of the sensor itself don't solder it, apparently they use air in the cable to measure the exhaust gas..

I've had a quick Google and from what I can see VW just use flexible conduit, is that what you mean?

Sorry I'm not following. I've found a couple of eBay sellers who list screened wire for CAM sensors, which I assume will work on my Oxygen sensor.

I'm still tempted to try the conduit and joints if the price isn't too high. As a tube buggy, the wiring harness will be visible, so conduit sounds nice. It can always be cut off and replaced with tape if it becomes a problem.
