Can I legally drive this on the road?

I've wondered about this before and when I did some research I couldn't find a definitive answer. It's a motorised wheelbarrow. I fitted the Honda engine some while ago and it has a centrifugal clutch, brake and diff lock. No lights, plates, or anything else. It does about 0 to 2 miles an hour in about 3 seconds.

I mostly use it to cart stuff around the garden and up the drive. I shifted about 48t of spoil with it a while back, all dug by hand.

I've no reason to take it on the road, but did use it a while back to scoop a lot of waste of the road when it flooded. No one was going to complain about that.

It is a pedestrian controlled vehicle and would need to be registered for road use - like those old electric carts postmen used to use.
No idea what standards it would have to meet though!

Google doesn't thow up an IVA link for Pedestrian Controlled Vehicles.

The manual refers to:

The IVA route is open to vehicles falling under the following categories:
M1, M2, M3,
N1, N2, N3
O1, O2, O3, O4

Vehicle approval

Type approval, individual (IVA), motorcycle single vehicle approval, voluntary approval, certificate of initial fitness, accessibility approval, fees, forms, replacement certificates

Pedestrian Controlled Vehicles aren't listed, but if you can prove it is over 25 years old you might get away with just trying to register it.

Sounds like a fun winter project for when it's too cold to do real work!

It’s an odd one. It’s neither a pedestrian controlled vehicle (category K) as it’s not got enough wheels, or a motorcycle because although it has two wheels they’re not in line.

““pedestrian controlled vehicle” means a vehicle with three or more wheels which does not exceed 450 kgs in weight unladen and which is neither constructed nor adapted for use nor used for the carriage of a driver or passenger.”

I suppose you could ask your house insurance company if they’d be happy to cover it to and fro like they would if it was a ride on mower, for example, and go from there?

Plan B, if you could be bothered, would be to put a third wheel on which does nothing other than tick a box and then register it with DVSA for road use.

I think I’d accept the loophole it seems to fall in and let sleeping dogs lie

Ah, missed the three wheels point. I like the idea of a third wheel (caster) just for the giggle factor of having a V5 for it.

Next pointless game is then getting an insurance quote for it as a road vehicle.

I have a similar one but mines got 3 wheels ( it’s not registered ) I’ve used mine on the footpath and road round here, delivering and picking up from various neighbours (but it is a very quiet area) I’ve also used it for towing/ pushing my powerfab digger round to my brothers who is 2 streets away

Definitely not capable of speeding. Could do some serious damage though. I used it to push a wall over. It carries about 400kg without grunting.

There are a few things with using stuff like this on the road, firstly is the road risk, insurers like a category so it's best to register the thing and get it a title, third thing is road tax, although foc it will still need to be taxed.
None of the above is an issue, easy to register as an ag machine.

Yes it is Lidl grey, it’s lasted well considering it was done 2 years ago and I didn’t prep it properly, it has lived out side since and like yours has moved between 40-50 tonnes since I did it,

Yes. It’s not a mower. Sorry to be a pedant but if it’s for grass cutting and nothing else it’s a pedestrian mower. You need a cat K licence and to be 16. A pedestrian controlled vehicle (which is not a mower but has three wheels etc etc) doesn’t need any licence

I thought mobility scooters sub 4mph didn't have to be registered.
Only if goes between the 4mph and 8mph bracket need registering.

Personally would almost mount the 3rd caster wheel and a buddy seat, that way then can use it for driven Barrow and just enjoy floating around.
