In the early heady days of our courting my new gal (now my second wife) drove 11 miles from her parent place to my home in her mini with a smoking almost totally flat tyre adjacent to the fuel tank.

Three buckets of water on it cooled it down enough to stop disasterous consequences. I put the spare on then took the cooked one to ATS for a new one to be put on .

Before I met her, Mrs Robo had the oil pressure light come on while she was on the M42, as she was only a few miles from home she thought it would be OK to get home, cost her a replacement engine.

I had a tyre go in the outside lane of the M40, luckily it was a back wheel so I managed to get to the hard shoulder (remember those) I don't think sticky string would fix this

Some time last year I parked up in my local Halfords and noticed a Mini nearby with two 90% flat front tyres, well and truly down on the rims. When I got inside the store I asked the only other couple of people there if it were their Mini. Yes, said the woman, holding a baby.... I told them both front tyres were flat and her response was "we had two new tyres fitted recently and they must have a leak, we have to take it back sometime".

The husband didn't seem bothered either, that they were driving around in death trap flat tyres, with a baby in the car too. I dread to imagine what it was like to drive.

One of my customers is a 'name brand' tyre maker who remould truck tyres. I maintain their real-time x-ray systems.
First thing they do is 100% x-ray on the worn tyre to make sure the internal plies are still in good shape (no point in going any further if the tyre's been severely kerbed or had a brick stuck between twin wheels).
As far as I recall, their own tyres are recut after the first 'life', using the remaining thickness of the first mould rubber.
Then they can be remoulded I think up to 3 times (there were cases of them being reused 5 times but I think 3 became a self-imposed limit).
Also seem to think I was told that a percentage of the tyres they remould didn't originally bear their own brand name, but for certain other makes they will accept the carcasses - as a buyer you will be unaware of what's under the new rubber.

Had a blowout on a dual carriageway once in a cherry picker. I'm still waiting for my medal managing to not topple the thing. I was taking over two lanes just to get it under control. It was like being on a skid pan. Anyhow long story short. Had an ats bloke come out (no spair). Nothing fancy. Two tyre irons and a bit of dancing around the rim on the side of the road. No tyre machines or anything. I was amazed.

His checklist thing was "too dark" on everything... Sign there. Off I went. Top bloke. Moaned a bit like "I shouldn't be doing this here ect ect" but he got me away.

Oddly enough it didn't, I started to loose speed in lane 3 so decided to head for the hard shoulder, it was only as I slowed down I could hear the tyre.
Changing the wheel on the hard shoulder was nerve wracking, but luckily it was wide and I could get most of the car off the tarmac giving me a decent gap to work in.

All we use on drive/ tag axles is remoulds or runners, the rate at which forestry/farm/site tracks destroy tyres there is little to no point in fitting new rubber. Steering axles get new.

Other half has done that. Complained when I blew the tyre up and the pressure warning, that had got used to the new low, so had turn off, started up again - she wasn't in the car long enough on her trip to/from the railway station for it to reset.

She's also driven 20 miles with it shouting at her but she thought it would be okay to get to her friends . . . tyre flat and wrecked.

Sister drove her Metro on a flat tyre long enough for the rim to mostly cut through the sideways, nearly separating the tread section . . . she also ignored the idea of oil changes, or the idea of checking the oil, and I guess the oil pressure light . . . until the big double row bearing alongside the diff let got, the balls escaping through a new hole in the gearbox side! While fixing it for her, I discovered she's ignored the chronic oil leak (hence the no oil) and the broken engine mount, meaning the exhaust had also leaked long enough, bad enough, for the air filter to be choked with soot from the hot air inlet dragging up the exhaust fumes . . .

I eventually had to rescue her at the local gym car park after 2 blokes who'd just finished their workout failed to help her get the wheel off ..........could not undo the wheel bolts. I kid you not.

Anyway, screw in tyre was the culprit, but the 2 month old tyre internals was toast after she drove on it until she parked up

Just because they are male, if they have no actual interest, never been shown, never done it, they won't have a clue.

I've had to show a fair few people even the direction to undo the nuts . . . or to undo them by using your foot to assist rather than heaving ineffectively on the wheel brace, before you jack the thing up.

We had a blowout on the motorway decades ago (nobody got hurt)....luckily it was quiet...ended up with the car on its side!

Ever since that happened I'm paranoid about tyres....to the extent that I will change tyres on a recently purchased car if I'm intending on doing a lot of motorway driving.

By chance I was watching "hows it made" last night and they showed remoulds being made...does seem a bit nuts that they'd fit these on HGVs!
