I’m not sure. I think the owner died and the chap selling is one of his relatives, who doesn’t know much about it. I’ve asked for a few more photos, and hopefully Steve of Landylift will be there to advise on what goes with it. Seemed a bargain either way.

£600 in the end. Well, I’ll finally be able to make a fixed steady for the boxford. Some of the ones I’ve seen are nearly half the price of that whole mill!As they say in football circles, "the boy done good".

Don't think the OP was suggesting he had any doubts about the authenticity of the ad. As it happens the seller does have a couple of other items that look to have come from the same lot.
As for probate; probate lawyers don't have milling machine specialists on tap - often the probate value is put forward by the executor of the will, which is typically a family member.
It looks like a lot of machine for the price, and I'm sure everything will be fine with the sale (other than the small matter of shipping it 600 miles!)

It pays with probate to value lowish, with evidence if you can. Revenue are not daft though…..but used tools are depreciating* assets unless refurbished by a dealer etc.

Some valuers for probate purposes have been convinced that a machine is "waiting for expensive repairs" on the basis that the power supply had been disconnected within the machine - it was valued at scrap rates (and he didn't even attempt to turn it on). At the end of the day, something is worth precisely what someone is prepared tp pay for it, and the more obscure the item, the less any "value" is fixed. The taxman is not going to come chasing after anyone if they claim a lathe had ways like a rough sea and was barely worth scrap - though if there were plenty of lathes in a factory and someone tried to claim that all the machinery was scrap at five years old, they might be tempted to ask for evidence...

if you had read the entire post there was an offer there, but like i said hudderesfield is a big area very similar to scotlands big districts you know what traveling them areas are like if your going by bus
as goes for the valuers well thats another matter as they have no idea how to value the machines
the issue with them they see our industry as dieing
some valuers are all in for selling abroad so of coarse will value lower

Yes, I do find the ebay listings with one crappy picture a bit odd. Doesn’t cost anything to take a few more, and common sense to do so. If that mill had been researched and listed properly, it would have gone for a lot more, but then again, selling off a dead relative’s workshop is not easy, and he may just want shot of eveything.
I did message the chap beforehand, and paid by credit card, so hopefully a little bit of protection.

but this has just about happened with all of our industrial industry and we the consumers are just as guilty for wanting cheaper goods and products however we should have taxed the imports so that our own industrys could compete with incoming goods
