Thats not the answer i was expecting fella..for the last 20 years i have been using normal 10/40 oil mixed for all my 2 stroke plant, i have a Stihl leaf blower i bought in 2003 and its still on its same piston and bore using it...Now thats a real life explanation of my experience by having no common sense according to the books. Without sounding argumentative can you back up your claim in post 18? as i am genuinely interested.

Do not use EP in any gearbox or axle unless the EP oil says suitable for yellow metals on the tin, or you know that the box has no copper or brass parts in it, and remember once upon a time, lots of ball races had brass cages, selector forks are often brass too. Plus some machine gearboxes have external oilways piped though copper bundy.

Moderm multigades are detergent oils and carry the contaminants in suspension in the oil to be filtered by the oil filter. Hydraulic / machine oil lets the deposits drop to the bottom of the case.

Every old mini gearbox (road ones, not competition) I've stripped has had a layer of black metal and carbon oil stuck to the bottom. Ok that's not to say the oil wasn't rying to prevent this of course, but I suspect much of that would be hype - really, in a lathe, what will detergent do? No carbon in there from combustion, so what's the issue?

Engine or gearbox oil is too thick and you will muller the spindle bearings due to inadequate lubrication as it would take too long to heat the oil adequately to get it thin enough to lubricate in the same manner as the originally specified oil.

10/30 is a lot thinner than the treacle I pulled out of my triumph. That's a fact.
Aaaand, "the originally specified oil" was what was generally used back in 1950 something...
In a straight fight between the two I would bet on anything running modern 10/30 the nod anytime.

Or just use an oil that the manufacturer specified and keep your machine in good health… maybe? It’s pretty cheap compared to rebuilding a headstock

I get it - use the specified oil, if you want. But really, bearings are bearings, gears are gears, and lathe gears used in home workshops, and even repair workshops are not worked hard. Even if they were, it would be a good oil that beat the ability of modern engine oils.
If you don't agree fine - go take a look at anything made by Mr Honda, Mr Kawasaki, Mr Yamaha or others since the 60's....

But there are bronze bushes in the gearbox of a Colchester master lathe.

Maybe there are (don’t recall there being but I’m not about to dig out my manual), if so engine oil is not about to harm them, to my knowledge.

Being in the plant and machinery trade I use transmission oils for my headstock, there designed to work with gears, bronze , brass and all those small needle bearing's Hiden in the depths of a gearbox.
The two I normally use are caterpillar 10w and 10/30 tractor transmission oil, not to be confused with 10w/30 engine oil. Yes they're more expensive than iso 32 but we have barrels of it in the workshop.
We also have hydraulic iso 32 and 46 as well but In my opinion transmission oils are far superior to hyd oils however that's just my honest opinion.

As stated in earlier post's please please DO NOT use engine oils in a gearbox, they won't foam to the extent many believe but they are made by design to hold on to small particles untill they are filtered out.
In a gearbox be it industrial, vehicular or the headstock of your pride and joy they will just be recirculated constantly wearing away at your gear and bearing surfaces.

We use iso 68 hydraulic oil in the machine tools we build. This is for lubrication to helical gears, worm gear sets, plain and roller bearings and also for hydrostatic bearings. I'm not saying that is what Colchester would recommend so I suggest you give them a call. They're based in Elland as Colchester Machine Tool Solutions and they should point you in the right direction.

Gamet bearings may 'just be bearings' but they are incredibly expensive if you have to replace them and in the case of the ones used by Colchester in their lathes headstock quite hard to source.
