How do I slow down my wipers?

I have an old Unimog , the windscreen wipers only run flat out, I would like them to be slower or perhaps two speed.

The wiper motor has four terminals on it. I have fiddled around with various leeds and switches ( one switch a two speed wiper switch) to no avail. All I achive is being able to run the wipers flat out.

I bought a 12V dimmer switch but that didnt work. What do i need to do please in order to slow the wipers down?

Just fit a vacuum powered wiper motor, that’ll slow them down , just when you want them faster though

Big resistor in line with the wiper motor would do the job, short across resistor for full speed.

Car manufacturers used to do this with fuel pumps for low speed/ low throttle situations.

A relay and a resistor would do the job and take the load off the switch.

What resistance have you got across the motor?, you can work out power drawn at this point and size a suitable resistor.

Yes a resistor (need to calculate the value, then the Wattage - it will be a big one. Anything else gets complicated quickly - current limiting circuits, maybe a dc to dc converter, you could run it on variable voltage ac even.

You can get 12v to 6v reducers.
I've fitted one to a tractor before using a 3 position switch.
Down = slow, center = off, up = fast
You could probably find an off/on/on switch which would be better but I used what I had

Might be positive, negative for park and 2 negitives for the speeds.

If it's got 4 Poles on it then it would be worth messing with as it might well have 2 speeds on it anyway

I'd go with a variable intermittent module - I built one for my landrover years ago when nothing else was available, but the item @dobbslc linked to above looks to provide a pretty much identical solution.
Just have it wired so you can switch between "normal" and "intermittent" mode and then dial the intermittent speed to suit the conditions. I think just slowing down the wipers will probably be less useful.

Way back in the 1970's, most cars only had single speed motors. Magazines for hobby electronics started to publish circuits you could build to give you intermittent wiping, and I built one and it was great. It looks like the Quasar kit in Post#3 does the same.

I think I would be inclined to go for intermittent wiping rather than trying to control speed. The design of the motor and the gearing may be such that reducing speed reduces torque by too much.

I think Quasar are an established company and should give you all the info you need on exactly how to fit it.

Does the wiper motor park if you just flick it for one wipe? If so, then all you need is a timer with a relay. That timer can be made variable so that it gives single sweeps at the interval you prefer. As others have said, there are intermittent wipe kits available for the purpose.

This is the thing; there is more than one way for wiper motors to be wired up. I recall all too well the first unit I made in the 70's did not work; it wasn't right for the circuit in my particular car. There was a bit more to it than just cutting one wire and inserting the "controller".
