Roof structure question???

I've been in the roof this weekend installing a load of insulation and I noticed this.

The perlin is supported on a block held up by a metal stake bashed into the morter course and it looks like it's "rolled" slightly to the right over time,
I assume the perlin is meant to be directly over the metal stake?
I'm thinking of drilling the block and fixing it in place with a couple of decent fixings, then maybe cutting a timber to fit up under it and bolt that to the wall, what do people think?

Every purlin I've seen (admittedly on old buildings) goes through the wall

Would have been 90 degrees to the rafter. Are the other walls the same?

If it makes you happy - go for it.

If you saw how the timbers in my roof have twisted,warped and moved over time, plus how they added the additional timber when it was extended before original sale in the 60's . . . you'd probably sleep in a tent in the garden

I think it's worth having a good look at the whole roof before you decide what to do. Looks like it is symptomatic of movement but it might not be the cause of it, nor might it be a cure.

That telephone cable looks like it’s attached to both - should add some strength.

Get rid of the block and the bit of steel sticking out the wall. Vee notch the end of a bit of 50x100 and bolt it to the wall vertically underneath the purlin. I’d use resin fixings because they are simple and foolproof. You might want to temporarily prop the purlin up while you do it, if only to make sure that your new support is actually is tight up against the purlin.

Sag in the roof joists has caused it to roll, is my guess. OK when it was first built but not god long term. I'd definitely want it anchored better. The purlin will eventually slip out of the notch.

Hi, Drive a wedge of timber into the left hand side gap between purlin and block to make the load of the purlin more central over the steel spike.

dont touch it need more photos asap means now of the roof of both sides and middle

the distance that its holding up

that beam is supposed to be inside of the walls resting on them

edit i also need to know whats below that beam all the way across

it would help with drawings and measurements as well from the outside wall to the middle house wall

middle house wall is it a brick wall or a wood wall

either way your going to have to shore up that beam while work is being done all depends on the damage that you want to what work you want to do to make it right

hence the reasons for sizes drawings and measurements

Hi dobbsic please take notice of comments from gaz1. The normal construction for this sort of purlin involves building a rot protected timber end into the brickwork as construction proceeds. This fixture provides resistance to the purlin twisting and provides an additional support to the two connected walls. In your position I would consider immediately referring the damage to your insurers as there is potential for a serious collapse. Good luck

I just remembered now you've said that, I did the same 4 years ago on the other end.

I know for sure the insurance won't pay for any work to fix this UNLESS it collapses!

Yeah, offset the anchor bolts so the lifting bolt can pass through.

How old is the house? Adjoining terraces often had one continuous loft. People come along later and build divinding walls etc.

It's a chalet bungalow detatched with a massive roof!
Built in the 50's.

Looking at that I would say that will twist the purlin anti clockwise

It's definitely been built like that. All the purlins are fixed the same as far as I've seen.

I'd be asking how long it's been like that....if it's been standing 80+ years it will have seen plenty of storms in that time.

You could bolt a support to the wall under the block of wood to prevent it moving but in the pic I can see 2 nails into the brick work maybe?

How about making a HD version of a joist hanger in 3"x3"angle , it could be cross bolted through the purlin and anchor bolted to the wall. just thoughts
