So why the butchering exercises guys ?I've done the same with simillar tap wrenches made of the same cheese , Abosolute carp
I was going to make a steel one but waiting on some stock for the project
A tap wrench with the correct tap .......1st 2nd or bottoming tap should only ever be progressed 1/6 of a turn before backing it off to clear the lip of swarf whilst lubricating the thread hole being tapped . You don't need mole wrenches to tighten the wrench just finger tight will do .
IIRC The only time I've ever broken a tap let alone the wrench was in tapping a 3 mm metric in brass bar held in the lathe chuck with tap in the tailstock chuck for true mess alignment , tailstock was hand free sliding & well lubed , lubed the tap with WD 40 working ever so gentle doing the sixth rule , five threads or so deep " Squeak " back out ...snap ! Had to turn about 3 mm back so the thread was still covered in a thin wall of brass then use pliers to hold it whilst I backed off the lathe by hand . Then re do the hole to the right depth .
I've got an interesting home made tap /auger wrench that a pal gave me many years ago ....I'll pop up a picture later on .
