Cutting tree roots

We are getting bad on here... we have a bloke who wants to use a digger being told he will destroy the building next to the area he is working on and destroy the planet with astro turf, 7.5ton trucks crashing everywhere because the gvmt is removing the restriction on post '97 licences, land rovers crashing because the owner wants to do some rust prevention and Gaz having a heart attack because someone wants to put a fence post in!

Its like every thread has to be catastrophised currently!

Just do a proper close board fence and adjust the bay sizes to miss the tree. No tree root problems, and no horrible panel fence to look at; jobs a good'un.

I don't mind a good thread spur, makes interesting reading.
Root wise I'm hearing, and reading cutting is bad, so got a variation on a plan that's just going to take more work and concrete, root stays.

My highly technical drawing, root is only 150mm below the natural ground so way too shallow to just fire the post on top.
But I have been fiddling the ground level as I have been going anyway and extending posts using a variation on this method.
It won't line up as perfect as in my lovely drawing but that's the jist of my new plan, just need to make some steel support legs and dig a way bigger hole than I need.

The finished article if you can't picture the pipe form, that's probably the most extreme one I have done, when backfilled nearly 5ft of concrete underground... Posts had better last a long time!

Anyway, back to neighbor disputes

i bet you have big jaxies lifting them concrete posts in i did ten last year

9ft intermediate posts are 76kg each, can just lift one of those. The corners are 96kg digger lifts those.

You see, now someone is gonna say you need to rip that all out and put gravel boards right down to ground level!! :-) ...i predict more catatrophising!

once the backfill has settled and compacted who's to say that's not ground level? (Bit more fuel for the fire)

The hole in your OP is clearly more than 150mm deep even if the root isn't. Put it to the side of it, nobody will notice your fence being a bawhair out of alignment.

Hack a bit off the root of needs be, it'll recover.

Get it in the ground and get on with your life.

The gravel boards will give it enough support.

If you were that fussy you wouldn't have stepped them either.

How tall or massive is the tree? Id have no problem cutting that.. It'll grow more roots if it needs them

If you do cut the root, sabre saw with a coarse pruning blade works great. The first I did was a recently felled pine stump right on the border, I had to cut a large section out of the roots.

Other side has a 8 meter Rowan tree. The root I cut must have been about 4". This was 2 years ago, looks very healthy, no lean and no problem in the wind.

If your worried, screw some big stainless screws in to the fresh cut that will anchor it into the postcrete.

Annoys me when a garden has the fence built inwards to exclude a tree or bush. I once tripped over such a bush, stealthily hidden between fence and unlit pavement. Landed knees first down a steep slope and took a couple months to fully heal.

Its a lot easier to install concrete posts and gravel boards in root congested ground if you go for close board fencing, you can move a post a few inches to avoid a root and shorten a bay to suit.

This was a bad one, not many bays the same length but the eye cant catch it.

I'm not fussed about the liability things, no neighbors on that side, just some woodland so, launch the chopped and fallen branches back when they come down.
Just don't want to do in the tree and it falls on my shiny new fence is a beast if a root! And sods law right where the concrete gravel board stops and the post needs to go

34 years ago the first owner of this new property planted three oak saplings on the top of the back fill that makes up my back garden as boundary markers , put in 3x3 oak posts and strainer wires on n all sides the original oak post & strainer wire fences are long gone but below ground were perfectly preserved stumps set in 2x2 x2 foot blocks of concrete , I had to take out the rotting stumps and bust all the concrete blocks as some genius had used a half panel to go over the stumps and then concreted in new deal posts . First decent blow we had here in 1995 and half of the fence panels & posts gave up ghost.

I purchased 25 x 9 foot H profile posts & 25 x 6x 5foot panels , later set on pallets and sheeted to get them dry and flat & gave all sides tops & bottoms three soakings all over of sprayed on Finnigans lonmg life wood sealer . It took months to dig out every stump and water in the soil infill then a week or so later carefully dug new mtr deep 400 x 400 holes with my special long handled spade , Set the first post vertical and used quick set to secure it , then welded up a braced steel substitute panel 6 x 5 foot to clamp to the set post so I could precisely plant the rest of the posts to suit the panels . Came to the final panel in the run that goes to a now 3 foot diameter oak and I have to make a an almost 2/3 bespoke panel to fill the gap . I had to do the same for two other fence end runs to using stripped to bits new panels and added some new top rails .
Now 17 yrs later the oak tree roots have pushed the 2/3 panel post at the base so the post leans to the tree , had to wack two engineering bricks in between the tree & the post to push the post back to the top of the panel ....panel now has a visible bend in it at the lower part .
To help reinforce the fence runs I've cast in a 9 inch high as wide as the posts concrete gravel boards in between the posts then sat three pavers on top , two 60 mm from the ends to alow drainage & air movement and one in the middle to allow wind to pass under as well as over the panels to reduce the pressure on the panels as it can now escape.

If you can see the drop from the laser it's over 1m in the bottom corner. That's pushing it a bit levitating the fence high enough to limbo under, also I have my only neighbor there, so he might have a few issues
Anyway, the panels are not stepped, I build them so they slope
Which is also the main reason I don't want to lop 6 inches off of the gravel board to move the post, the panel going in is a sloper and chopping it down will screw the height, and I ain't binning 30 slats and battens.
Will be fine, im not going to lose any sleep over it

I prefer bolt on cant rails. Get one complete fence and don't notice the variation on panel length at all.
