Cutting tree roots

Putting up a concrete and wood fence, got a bit of an issue with a huge root

Well, first had an issue with a lump of concrete, split that and the root was there.
Also a bit of earth wire? Anyway, this roots about 80mm thick right next to the tree.

Can't really move the post hole, will the tree die/fall over if I cut a gigantic root so close to the tree? Think there are a few tree doctors about here

Nope. That tree will have plenty of well established roots.

will only fall over if theres a real strong wind blowing from the way the roots cut there again it might not

I wont beat around the bush on this subject

owners plant trees close to boundary on purpose (being arrogant ) well thats fine with me subject but im going to chop every branch off of it

im replacing the boundary wall and theres roots im going to cut that root back behind the boundary

want to argue it im on my own land go get .....

so in my case id dig around the root and dig below it then id get the wood saw and cut straight through the root on both sides

then just concrete it in as it stands dont cut deeper on there side not worth the boundary argument

A new neighbour of my mother in laws built a swimming pool right up against her boundary, this was a woodland both sides of the boundary, he chopped all the roots on his side. Trouble is the three ash trees were about 80ft high & leaned right over his new pool. First big gale they were going to go over.
It cost him a small fortune to get decent tree surgeons in who we recomended to fell them.

You can cut bits off a neighbour's tree if it's overhanging your property but if you compromise the tree by cutting bits off and it falls over or becomes dangerous because of it you're liable.

I'm not fussed about the liability things, no neighbors on that side, just some woodland so, launch the chopped and fallen branches back when they come down.
Just don't want to do in the tree and it falls on my shiny new fence is a beast if a root! And sods law right where the concrete gravel board stops and the post needs to go

You could buy 2 extra panels and move 2 posts either side of the tree and cut the panels to size

Google ‘root pruning’

It’s the same as branch pruning in that it can be done but needs to be done well.

If that root is structural then there won’t be anything supporting the tree in that direction if you cut it.

Is the hole not deep enough? If you can avoid going deeper then post foam can be useful. More tree friendly than concrete.

People have been using trees etc as hedging / boundary plantings since the Middle Ages

As a guide the local tree officer allows us to cut anything upto 50mm. Anything over he considers structural and requires a change of plan

With that I'd just cut the post down a bit as the hole looks deep enough, you could also widen it a bit to give a bigger footprint.

A bit less work to maintain in the long term and if space allows a far better solution than a two bob fence panel, also a safe haven for nesting birds and other wildlife.

an 80mm root so near the trunk and such a large tree its not on realy and make it real unstable along with starving it of moisture

only the snobs did whilst trying to be snooty nosed at the same time

everyone else used stone walling or earth wall

its why they imposed a law of theft

No, not without their permission. Windfall fruit still belongs to the owner.

but yet dont want there branches back or there leaves

I dont want that i cant make a profit on that as its waste i dont want
