What do I need to wire this up?

So almost a year ago the electricians were supposed to come and didnt turn up. I have a bit of spare time now and I want to get my TIG welder wired in. I can run it on 415v.

Can someone tell me what MCB and what mm2 cable I should go for? I can run single strands from the DB via trunking to a socket. The run can be short to the socket (10m tops).

My DB setup is all in this thread.

Happy to take any other advice on how to set this up.

These pull silly amounts of amps on single phase. Ideally a three phase machine,but quite honestly,with electricity prices like they are,you would be better weighing it in and buying a much more efficient inverter type Tig welder that uses a fraction of the power that this does ,to get similar...

Reading the plate. With it flat out on ac tig it will pull 77amps on 415v

Next time I'm at work I'll get a photo of how mines wired.

It's on two phase, on a 32 amp plug.

Maybe not cranked it to maximum, but seems quite happy on a 32 amp circuit.

That’s the max current the RCD can handle, not a trip rating. Your max current will likely be limited by the MCB in the house (or wherever) that supplies the shed, which will be sized to the cable between. I would find the weakest link and size your cabling to that.

I've got 4g16 running to thé future workshop, and from there to thé barn will bé 4g10, all thé circuits will bé 5g6, I'll put earths in each building.

That’s the max current the RCD can handle, not a trip rating. Your max current will likely be limited by the MCB in the house (or wherever) that supplies the shed, which will be sized to the cable between. I would find the weakest link and size your cabling to that.

Incoming phases are all fused at 100 amps. They then split to supply the cottages and also feed a 100amp 3phase isolator on the supply to the shed.

It will certainly get you started. You should be able to get 180amp output from it on a 40amp MCB. Make sure it's a type C or D. Otherwise you won't get it powered up.

How thick will 180amps allow me to weld? It might be the most I ever need.

No, it's three phase and neutral, and I'll install local earths.

Sorry, I don't know much about French electrical installations, but I am interested to learn how other countries do things.

In the UK if you are installing local earths I would expect a 4x10 cable (4 cores of 10mm2 none of them earth) rather than a 4g10 cable (4 cores of 10mm2, 1 of them being earth)
Under European harmonized cable designations the 'g' indicates one core of the cable is an earth core whereas 'x' denotes that none of the cores are an earth.
