As with anything it depends on the design of the converter, they tend to not be top performers as they are made to a budget. Mutek made a “high performance” 10m to 2m transverser which I recall was very good, Mutek worked hard for dynamic range and getting the overall noise figure down, a challenge with HF rigs, but it was as pricey as a good 2m multimode rig. Please tell me: Is the large signal strength really that much better on 2m if you do it with converter, compared to a good VHF all-mode unit?
I mean the old contest problem when you want toworkhear a weak station but are surrounded by loud strong stations.
Thanks a lot.

My experience is with Trio/Kenwood and in terms of rx performance the TR9000 was sensitive but suffered near strong signals. It’s successor the TR9130 was much better near strong signals but was a bit deaf in comparison. The TR751 was more sensitive than the TR9000 and better with strong signals than the 9130! The TS790 Base station beats them all in both aspects. However it is bettered by the TM255 which is a quite rare beast now. I’ve got the 751, 790 and 255 and have put them back to back on air and on the test bench.
The FDK mentioned above is also an excellent performer, I‘ve got one in need of fettling so not had chance to measure it.
