To get back to my upcoming task of having to make a 272mm long gib-strip for the long ML7 cross-slide
- and also to stop myself from getting into the pharma conversation -

my question:

Would you make this out of cast iron or gunmetal, maybe brass?

And how - if there is a thread on this here, I haven't found it?

Brass and with a dovetail cutter if it's a standard rhombus, or just buy it as seen 232mm ones on ebay

I wouldn't know what the correct size is, there's part numbers in some of the eBay listings so that should help you but if you have a mill and the time you can just make your own.

on the topic of hay fever - has anyone had an Kenalog Injection ?

I've tried pretty much every tablet there is trying to find a decent one.... only one that doesn't knock me out if loratadine - but I'm taking six a day instead of one a day


I'm ok if I take them, hardly ever sneeze, can breath ok most of the time.... but as soon as I lay down to sleep my nose blocks and I'm breathing through my mouth all night (snoring keeping the gf awake too)

trying to look for something a bit better, and I'm guessing 6 a day of the one a day tablets isn't good for me long term

I hated nasal sprays too then I found avamys, two sniffs of that first thing in the morning when I know the pollen is bad and a single loratadine taken every day from march till October and I'm ok.
But if you wait until symptoms appear to start taking the nasal spray its too late and it doesn't really recover the situation.

After breaking through the weapons-grade plastic, I found this box:

Bought via eBay.co.uk and forwarded to me by an extremely helpful fellow forum member who really spared no effort.

Make two or three gib strips out of precision brass strip , drill light locating indents in the strip to correspond with the block .. that's what's on my lathe .

The locating screws have a reduced rounded point for this locating in the gibs .
It takes two or three attempts till you get the feel of resistance right . I started at one end got it right then moved to the center pair , then the final pair , backed each screw off 1/12 of a turn till things started to move , progressed to the last pair doing the same then carefully locked each up its half nut .
Found at first I'd also moved the adjusting screw a smidgeon as well , that's why it took several attempts .
In the 8 or more years I've had the lathe that's been the only time I've done the cross slide gibs . .

They've also given me some Morphine but I'm saving that for recreational purposes

The first 96 hrs are the worse , after that its just a bit off pain .., I offer that you leave the morphine alone , for a lot of folk it makes them very very anally retentive , overcoming that makes you strain & that does hurt your knee

I got as much morphine as they could give me and it didn't help so they had to call the surgeon who administered some ketamine, pain soon went and I was talking gibberish but fully aware of it

That's just the Scottish accent ?
I was put on ketomine pain clinic trials back in1995 for my spinal injury , it did not work on iota , but ihid twype hy worms inn hay a mucking fuddle fore skeferall wheats .

In huge pain all last night.screaming at times. I had 2 lots of morphine and would take more if I could get to it. Wifes hid it.
Going back to see Doc in an hour.
Morphine ibuprofen paracetamol codeine still no good.

A doctor told me there are three families of painkiller and they all work differently. Paracetamol is in one family, ibuprofen is in another, and codeine and morphine are both in the third. Because they work differently, you can take the maximum dose of pills from separate families, e.g. paracetamol and ibuprofen, but not from the same family, e.g. codeine and morphine.

They put me on the max dose of paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine after my op (pain wasn't enough to justify morphine)

Probably doesn't help but just thought I'd put it out there

Something for turning

Look neat - above low eBay-level, weren't expensive, arrived very quickly, packaged perfectly and as a bonus a pair of work gloves as cushioning material.
What's not to like?


I got some tips on knurling here and @Lewis_RX8's DIY report also inspired me to try my hand at it, but now I needed a quick solution.

Smaller opening than I would have liked, but I needed something now and still have to practise.

The brown colour is preservative grease, not rust.

Possibly not hayfever but, sinus irritation from all the crap that gets up there..

Sudafed/boots decongestant pseudoephedrine works very well for me when I get it. One of the few medicines worth having in cupboard.
