When you get that phone call from the office

Well guys and girls today has been a bad day but thankfully they say bad luck only comes in 3 so I’m over half way there now. And only have one more calamity to spring it’s self on me and endure or actually maybe breaking my finger counts so I’m 3 for 3 hurray.

Had the phone call from the office today saying they were starting the redundancy process so looks like my job is coming to the end. Never been in a situation like this before so any advice?

What were you doing ? What do you want to be doing ?

Appreciate no one wants to be made redundant, do you want to stay in the same role / job, or do something different ?

In my experience (redundant three times) all the decisions have already been made, so negotiate the best deal you can rather than fight for the job - I’ve seen it from both sides having had to make people redundant too.

Rubbish news, I have been made redundant in the past and made staff redundant, really hate it.

If you do get served a notice of redundancy, if you have over 2 years service you are entitled to reasonable paid time off to look for another job or arrange training for future opportunities.

Make sure you have a plan for when you finish work. I didn't, and before I realised it, 6 months had passed. I had put on weight, and got out of the habit of getting up in the morning. Don't let it happen to you

Marine engineer, experience as 3rd engineer on large container vessels total time with that company 8 years including 4th and cadet. 3rd had sort of morphed into a lesser seconds engineers role by the time I left.

2nds ticket motor ships unlimited.

Experience as sole/chief engineer on small landing craft.

Open to change and moving with the lack of jobs in my area and how badly seafarers are treated these days by employeers.

26, will be 27 in July.

Some experience for shore side fabrication company as purchaser and project support.

I intend too was thinking of leaving ening anyway so I may just see what kinda deal I can get on my way out the door.

Answer this…..Do you want to continue at sea until you decide its for fools and fish?

if yes, go find another job get class 1.

if no…move south and broaden your horizons. There are always opportunities if you get out there and find them. The world is your lobster!
