Practicing spray painting…?

Gun wash, I'm need some of this. eBay seems the cheapest but many of the products are listed as cellulose. Due to my inexperience in this area I'm unaware as to whether I can clean a gun that's sprayed a 2K isocyanate paint with a cellulose gun wash. Anyone advise?

So here's my first attempt at spray painting via my DeVillbiss GPG...

... Lechler 29107 onto bare steel. As a first attempt it was ok, although on inspection...

...some of these imperfections look like tiny craters and others tiny bumps/pimples for want of a better word.

Would these be dust particles? Other than that it "appears" ok, I guess. Complete novice.

You have dirt inclusion, too thick an application (pressure low?) and the craters are either pinholes in the substrate or "fish eyes" due to oils / silicones etc on the panel. Let it go off for 24 hours, clean it thoroughly, flat it to 320 dry and then try a lighter couple of coats over the top.

I set the gun at 2 bar, data sheet says 2-2.5, though I did wonder if my application could've been a little heavy, I thoroughly went over the panel with panel wipe prior to application. The panel is from 2008 Mondeo there wasn't any imperfections upon inspecting the bare steel.

Yep too thick, what air pressure did you have?

When you get too keen the paint will sag from too much. I remember learning a long time back

Do you have correct paint, hardner, thinner ratio it looks a heavy coat
A lot of dust a wet floor if you don't have a dust free environment helps also make sure air line is clean on outside
Painting is 90% prep & dust reduction, the craters as @ajlelectronics pin holes or contamination (silicone)

I do appreciate it's a completely different substrate but I've just practiced on brown masking paper hung on a wall and I can't see any of those pimples or craters. I haven't used any thinners

2 bar, the fluid and air setting on the gun is on wide open, fan setting at minimal (maximum anti clockwise) got the info from paint society via youtube

The 29107 data sheet says 2 to 2.5 bar for the product.

A lot of nooks & crannies for dust and nasty to hide in the door and paper is not really a good measure
Personally I would not set fan to minimum, but that is a personal thing, but the lumps are dirt/dust unless there was dirt in the gun or paint

The 2 bar needs to be set with the spraygun trigger open, the fluid needle shouldn't need to be wide open for that paint. Have you checked the viscosity of the paint with a viscosity cup?

Was the paint filtered before it went in the gun? I've been there myself battling dust....in the end I used screwfix plastic dust sheets everywhere (including the roof) and that helped a lot...still needed to flat the panels which was annoying because without the dust the finish would have been perfect!

I was told (by my paint guy) never to buy "gun wash"...according to him its not a good idea....instead we just used a cheap thinner as the gun wash.

when panel wiping ...always new paper towels , soak one so its almost dripping and wet the panel , follow behind quickly to dry it with another towel , dont let it dry on the panel , if the panel is suspect for grease etc throw the towels and repeat

Well watching the Gunman and reading paint tech sheets taught me everything I know about spray painting . and my first project turned out great off the gun finish I was so happy did not even bother polishing the clear coat.

In short Just go for it.

Yes, masking paper on a roll. Don't even consider using newspaper etc, a roll of masking paper is one of the first consumables that you should be buying.

They last for ever for a hobbyist. I have a roll I bought 20+ years a go and it's most commonly used for wrapping parcels.
