In a bit a weird conundrum at the moment, I have been offered a new job still have my other new job I have only had for a few months. This one better pay, more perks, less holidays but in a field I have no real experience in which the guy knows and is happy to train me.

Saw the add in the paper, gave they guy a call just to see what it was about, sent him a CV said he’d get back to me in two or three weeks. Following morning I get a phone call from him saying when can I start. I was measured and said I’d have to think about it.

Good learning opportunity, not paying for travel to work as company van gets included and fuel, phone contract covered. He seems really keen and he wants to expand into the marine sector more so thinks I’d be an ideal candidate.

Current jobs not too bad but boring not really challenging for me a lot of sitting around but it’s ok.

It’s a hard one from my perspective it’s a nice offer I don’t deny that I have tried to put him off a bit as there is a contract out for tender that we are bidding on which we should know the answer too in a few weeks and all our jobs kinda hinge on it coming off though it’s pretty likely that we will get it though nothing is a certainty. But he wants an answer by Monday though is happy to give me a start date a month away which is when we would know the results by.

I know it’s my decision and mine alone but anyone got any thoughts?

If the existence of my current job was dependent on the company getting the next contract or not and I had the offer of something more secure come up I think I would take it at the moment.

I've just accepted a new position, my old (current) employer couldn't match the offer, never mind beat it.

It's a change in direction, building on my previous experience but certainly a lot to learn

The advice I have given younger colleagues in the past, is to ask themselves what the want to be doing in 10 years time and would this new job advance your progress towards it?

I am not sure how much there is to learn making hydraulic hoses, when I worked in hydraulics: all my fitters/technicians could make hoses, though that was not one of the more interesting or rewarding jobs.

Job descriptions are a bit like eating in restaurants, it all sounds very nice but you always have to imagine what the description actually means in reality. So like 'duck a l'orange' is always a small piece of rubber hard meat in a marmalade based sauce.
Sounds like your new job could besomething like this: Going out to breakdowns in the middle of nowhere and lying in an oil sprayed puddle removing burst hydraulic hoses on under maintained machinery. Making a new hose and then fitting the new hose, refilling the tank and testing. Sorry to be cynical. It sounds like fun in the winter.

Mobile hydraulics guys can have it pretty rough in the winter, get a an excavator do a hose and it could be up to its gizzards in mud/mayhem. Fitter will be expected to get under that come rain or shine, pulling off machines belly plates is no fun in those conditions.

I worked with a fella who had done that for nearly 20 years, He didn't want me getting into it even with me occasionally working with him it was more to gain how to do it rather than learn that trade. He recommended getting in the mechanical technician stuff maintaining all mechanical things rather than just making hoses. A clankie could make most hoses as well as rebuild pumps and rams but a hose fitter could only really do hoses which he did very well and very quick with a lot of knowledge about them but that's all he really knew and could not really move up the ladder with that skill set unfortunately.

To be honest from what I can work out your previous job seemed better but hose tech could open up other routes if you try like plant fitting or hydraulic techs. I would say when I spent time working with the hose fitter there was a lot of interesting jobs that differed a lot one day working in TechnipFMC and other massive CNC machine shops on their kit another day fixing paper mill stuff but also some days on waste disposal and bin lorries so win some lose some.

I went down mechanical maintenance apprenticeship but I was looking at it through different context to you I suppose different serving time in a trade compared to just getting a job.

I think it's a pretty rough job at the best of times, by it's very nature there is oil everywhere and every job needs fixing 3hrs ago.

We used to collect our work parts at Pirtek, one of lads there had his hand near a burst pipe and it injected into his hand, he had to have peeled to get it cleaned.

True it’s the company’s bread and butter work well paid though far better than here anyway. Though diagnostics and repair of all types of mechanical machinery and engine overhaul and replacement is other big areas. Why the guy said he was so interested in me as he’s just opened up a new workshop in a boat yard that went bust and is looking too get more deeply involved in the marine side of things would be an opportunity to get experience working on a much wider range of machinery and equipment.

You will probably already know replacing hoses can quickly become hydraulic fault finding for the the stuck relief valve or faulty solenoid that is over-pressurising and bursting the hose. if it gets you into other areas may be worth unpleasant aspects.

He slightly misworded it. However, if you do something, you know the outcome. It's far worse to regret never trying & wondering what the outcome may have been.

Current boats I’m on are in a iffy way ones being sold, four crews laid off, and another boat is laid up the two left have very little work. Think a lot hinges on this contract. Perfect job in some ways if they get it as it’s two years garunteed work but if not well you know. Makes for interesting times the old Chinese curse.

kinda mulling it over for other reasons too, I’m not doing very much engineering work these days just more records, deck work and cleaning/painting nothing much very interesting.

Ask your self this…….and answer honestly…..where do you want to be in 5, 10 and 20 years time…its much harder to move forwards after youve moved backwards. And been a hydraulic hose fixer is a big backward step, based your traininig, experience and qualifications.

Though I do understand your at a time in your life ever seafarer reaches…..where you realise going to sea is for fools and fish! Though if youve not got your Class1 yet, hang on till you have it. Though you may not want to use it, it will open doors for you, maybe not now but in time.
