Mobile hydraulics guys can have it pretty rough in the winter, get a an excavator do a hose and it could be up to its gizzards in mud/mayhem. Fitter will be expected to get under that come rain or shine, pulling off machines belly plates is no fun in those conditions.

What I have been trying to setup on my own doing but don’t really have the experience with shore side plant and trucks just Yet though to really be effective, have done the odd car for mates though and it’s gone pretty well. When i looked into hose fitting someone i knew that'd done it told me it's all well and good until you get sent to a bin lorry or landfill dozer, then you're dropping bellypans and crawling in among maggots and rotting nappies to replace hoses. That put me off pretty quick.
@Robbie260 have you looked into roadside assistance? It's by no means the best job out there, but it's easy, no commute, every day's different, easy to make money, etc. Maybe not a long-term thing (i've done it for 4 years) but it's stable and pays well.
Based on Fort William highland. I’m a marine engineer with 8 years experience, mainly working on, servicing and trouble shooting compressors, centrifugal separators, medium speed diesels, pumps, slow speed diesels, electric motor and gearbox cranes and industrial boilers, sewage treatment plants. Plus much more marine specific equipment such as container cranes and mooring whinches, windlass’s etc. electrical trouble shooting and penumatic control systems, worked on a lot of high voltage equipment. Can of course do the usual carpentry, electrician and plumbing work. Limited experience with hydraulics and hydraulic style cranes, getting a lot more experience with high speed Diesel engines.Yup x1000
Poorly trained, loads of time pressure, crappy sites, no machine specific training
This is my experience of guys, the old boys who know the job are damn good. But Young's guys don't want to do it leading to desperately employing anyone and time being so little guys are going out undertrained.
Where are you based? What's your skillset let's collectively be objective and help other than nay say
Right, where's that heroin! You'll only ever regret the things you didn't do.
Right….now youngster…..listen. I shall say this only once. “DONT be a RICHARD HEAD, go sit the orals and pass. It will open doors for you that you obviously cant see yet. If you dont do it now you never will.As @addjunkie will agree marine engineers are very versatile people and can turn a hand to just about anything. And I have the sea time now for it just need to sit the orals exam.
Yes I have been thinking this over and my main goal is still get my chiefs ticket. Don’t know what I’ll do with it but I know I want that ticket at very least put in too much hard work up till now to miss out on it. And while They is a bit of a mess it’s my best opportunity for that just now I think.Right….now youngster…..listen. I shall say this only once. “DONT be a RICHARD HEAD, go sit the orals and pass. Yes we are a fairly versatile bunch who end in all sorts of places out of those whom I keep in track off, theres a few offshore, a few at sea, a couple in Barrow and Sellafield. A few became police and firemen, ones at lloyds, another a loss adjuster, MD of a chemical company. Another boss at a pump company, a driving instructor, crane mechanic, publican, another works as a heating engineer doing big systems. All sorts, the world is your lobster.
Your biggest restriction is your desire to stay local. This will limit your opportunities just purely down to geography and your local demographics.

I have mine, didn't even know where it was for a while, though its just a poxy plastic card now I believe. Hadnt given it a thought for years. Then I was invited to apply for a job (title irrelevant), interview went well. But apparently I didnt tick all the boxes….No degree…… Ah but I have this other thing, from the government says Im a “proper engineer”. Confused human remains a tad, they like ticked boxes. Nice HR lady rang me about 10 days later after having done some research. And apparently now I tick all her boxes. My response was thanks but no thanks, why would I want to live and work in London town with massively increased living costs, plus 50% of my current money to be promoted!Yes I have been thinking this over and my main goal is still get my chiefs ticket. Yes going to turn down the offer, but seeing as things are a tad shaky I’m going to say if you haven’t managed to fill the position in 4 to 5 weeks time then your welcome to give me a call and see if my situation has changed. As by then I should know the out come of the contract award and weather I still have a job or no. Not that I’ll say that little bit.I have mine, didn't even know where it was for a while, though its just a poxy plastic card now I believe. Hadnt given it a thought for years. If the current boaty mc boat face job goes belly up, there will be others. Jumping ships great but you need to land on something solid not a poo pile.
Didn't realise you had to fit them too ?
