wow. bad, bad times. Dreading to see fuel price hikes over the next few days.

when are we going to wake up to the fact that we NEED oil to live? Right now, we NEED it.
All this dependence on the rest of the world is infuriating.

What do we do? As a nation we've become accustomed to spending our money on stuff that really is an irrelavance.

I'd advocate self sufficiency, a return to growing your own veg. Get your kids to wash the car rather than paying some East European fella. Open a jar rather that going to a coffee chain etc. MIght cancel my Pret coffee subscription on principle. A latte there is £2.95 now ffs. OK, I pay £20 a month for up to 5 "free" drinks a day. More than pays for itself tbh but at those over inflated prices they would otherwise charge. I mean, Costa, Pret etc, what do we get out of it other than short term gratification? Htf is "barrista" a real job at the end of the day? Netflix, Amazon, take aways etc.

We're lazy by and large. I'm as guilty as most.

The natural gas reserves West of Shetland are huge I worked in the drilling industry on MODU for 35 years large reserves were found and tagged for development in these areas for the future, now I am fully aware of the need to look at alternative sources to hydro carbons but not at the expense of the general public due to cost or limited availability due to some clown in Russia

The price of fuels is linked directly with the cost of production and transportation.

I had one yesterday actually….(We've been asked to ring you by Mr xyz) there is a fair bit of work about due to the post Covid pick up.
Rate wasnt good enough to even think about it. Just over half the last offer I had about 3 months ago.

Just before Christmas I was chatting to a guy who works for KBR who was saying oil and gas companies were costing projects based on the $60 a barrel region.

While in principle as an island nation I agree we should be energy independent, the reality of just reopening oil wells isnt quite so straight forward. They were shutdown as they were not viable to produce due to operating expenditure and ageing infrastructure. Once a reservoir is depleted, in effect you have an empty tank and need to go and drill into anew one,
More importantly in my opinion we should be self sufficient in food production not reliant on shipping for example South American Pears to Thailand for packaging then onto the uk for sale…utter madness espescially with the cost of fuel let alone the eco impacts.

While I wasn't old enough to be fully aware of the time, from the tales I've heard up and down the country from those working in big companies at that time - she didn't need to do much to tip things over the edge as the antiquated industries and workforce practices had already done much of the groundwork for her!

They decided that maybe they should have a little bit of that value for themselves. We were paying 30p a gallon for petrol- then all of a sudden there wasn't any. Queues outside fuel stations for hours , and this didn't go on for a few days, like last year it just carried on as prices began to rise. The price of oil continued to go up, then the Government issued everyone with fuel rationing coupons, as a scare tactic , to quell panic buying, but they were never actually invoked. After a few months petrol prices settled at about 65p a litre , so a 115% increase over the six month or so period of instability. It soon crept up to a quid a gallon. Then of course that affected the price of everything, so we ended up with price inflation and then wage inflation. Coal miners on strike- no electric, the 3 day week and all that lot , that eventually ended up with M Thatcher getting in in 1979. Another story.

Just about remember that ,, Mrs Thatcher was good to the armed forces , I remember the pay rise we got that brought us back to a reasonable living wage it was very much appreciated .

I just liberated a stock of several hundred candles from my 83 yr old mum that date back to those times - terrified she would use them now (she's not exactly steady of hand or foot these days!), so removed them and supplied her with numerous battery lanterns and spares batteries.

I left the oil lamp, as there's no oil or wicks . . . I think!

I can still remember the "nice" drivers and I stopped working for Welcome Break in 1995 - even got wedding cake slices from two lorry drivers who used to come through! And their complaints about the new governors/limiters affecting their ability to climb the hills on the M62

the worst hill being the longest the one heading up to the red and white roses

the lancashire to yorkshire side

also the worst side for catching a really bad cross wide between the hills

but not at the expense of the general public due to cost or limited availability due to some clown in Russia

you should look at usa and nato and uk who wanted to put troops right on the border of russia

so before you go pointing fingers take a good luck elsewhere first

I get free firewood from several farms for my woodburner and I filled up my three oil tanks last summer at 28p per litre so it's only electricity costs that hit me.

So I’ve actually just got my energy prices from EON, I put them into a percentage calculator because I’m thick
57% estimated increase
Fortunately I can afford it but the people I feel most sorry for are those already struggling.

But they’re twice the numbers!!

Electric prices here are mental. We are the only county that generates more than 100% of its electricity requirements but we pay the most. Go figure…..
