It's calming down a bit here.

A bit of a dodgy fence panel came adrift. A dustbin blew over and some plastic ducks came out of their pond.

Roofs still on the house though and my workshop is still in one piece.

Well madam has been panicking! She does love something to fret about and has been up all night waiting for the apocalypse because TV news says so. "But the Environmental Agency are involved". The cat flap is blocked off too, but I can't get a coherent reason for that, although it is and has been calm and dry. We had a nice lady from the EA drop off an A4 "warning letter" last night, together with a few empty bags, so of course that has fueled her fire and she is astonished that I am not cowering in bed. I did move my dual band Yagi into the predicted wind and will go in late, just to keep her happy that I am being safe.

The tide appears to be going out at the moment and the river level is about what it would normally be.

I thought they leave the brakes off when they come down, so the wind can blow the crane round (i.e it blows to the bearing with least resistance)

They can put them into free slew but if the cranes overlap each other you can't do it or they'll crash!

Might be true for flat, wide, open spaces, but it swirls all over the place in built up areas.

I did say “Generally” - not forgetting tower cranes are usually quite a bit higher than other things around them ( though not always of course)
