do you know anyone who has actually managed to use stockings as a fan belt? I’ve never tried, but we went to an auto cross meeting on Hounslow Heath in about 1970 & it was really dusty so I tied a pair of my then girlfriends ( now wife)knickers over the trumpets on the twin SU’s. Before you ask, she didn’t have to remove them, she had a spare pair as we were there for the weekend

I know it's a bit late but back in about 1979/80, I was running a 1600E and had the dyanmo fall off on the A9 heading back up from Glasgow to Lossiemouth. I had a couple of mates with me and one of them, a welsh rugby player, suggested buying a pair of stockings (had to be black though!) which we did in, iirc, Newtonmore.

The first attempt failed a couple of miles up the road but the second go got us all the way back to camp!

Spotted a garage/yard sale 5 mins. up the road from me - on local face ache page - came back with these

the loppers are extending handle ones, better than my standard ones, and a Ryobi strimmer, I'll find out if it's any good tomorrow, don't know much about petrol strimmer's, so just hope this is a reasonable make/model.

Friday I acquired a little light in my life.

Wired LED light, to be more precise - I wanted something I could turn on and off along with the machine light.

Expectations weren't high, which is better with this one supplier - they got me around with the bonus items.

The manufacturer is supposedly located in Poland, which I know and often appreciate with mechanical products, with electronic items they have not yet come to my attention.

A lot of light comes out in any case ...

Mains-connected LED lamps - especially the cheap ones, but not only those - are often made pulsating, which is not too bad at the full mains frequency of 50Hz, our eyes are too sluggish for that, but if they use only every second half-wave of the mains voltage, some people can perceive that.

The fact that I came here while photographing exactly into a switching process can be complete coincidence or an indication of flickering ....

The second lamp aims with its presentation and the price probably at a somewhat higher segment, but comes from the same "manufacturer", conveys the same plastic feel and also comes up with some placement and hanging gimmicks.

Talked me into trying this supplier again with these flashlights, one for each LED light, looked good on offer:

They make a good impression, good size, good weight, O-ring seal on the battery compartment and a pretty strong magnet in the end cap ...

The red strobe light will hopefully not get much use time with me ...

As a surprise give-away then another miracle oil, which might also be just another iteration of the MoS2 creep oil theme - this one with a scent that reminds me of the smell of freshly cut celery.

Must just be good, with that name and "plus" and "professional" and "multi" and "extreme" and - although brand new on the market already multiple test wins (in presumably self-created tests) - the most interesting feature for me on the back: caution, highly flammable!

Before recent rule changes, when people asked me to recommend drain cleaner I told them "the one with the most warning symbols"

It's a Ryobi, not the best but by no means the worst. Designed, I think, for the home user and not Pro use. It'll cut grass.....

My guitar teacher once told me that leaving a magnet near a LCD screen will affect it. I was skeptical because I guess that he believes that because magnets can affect CRT screens. Here are some

Only seen it once by accident, but certainly made use of the stropboscopic effect with high speed machinery to "freeze" the action before the days of cheap (30 grand for our first one, refurbished!) high speed cameras.

One or two of the earlier LED headlamps I have flicker at a rate that would be dangerous near a lathe at the right speed.
I've noticed the ones I've bought in the past couple of years aren't guilty of that, but it pays to check, as they're all / or mostly driven by a pulsing circuit.

I can see it on my lathe under certain older LED lighting , usually in a fifty cycle harmonic when I can hear the lathes running tune changes when the property's incoming mains power momentarily waxes & wanes for ten to fifteen volts or more in a regular pattern over ten to fifteen seconds or so .

The very latest LED floods I've got do not produce a phase related flicker that I can detect but before advancing the cutting tool or doing anything to the chuck or tool post I always check the back gear condition to see what is happening , is it stopped or moving the drive belt?
