I have a couple of routers, the main one is an older Ryobi industrial machine, soft start, 30000 rpms and 2.5Kw of sheer power. The small bosch gof 900 for light routing, a bosch gof 600 palm router for most hinges and rounding over and a dewalt and a makita laminate trimmers...these don't get much use lately as i use the other machines...

I have a Trend T4 which is scary to use and a Katsu (Makita clone). The Katsu gets used a lot more than the Trend, it's a great bit of kit for not a lot of money.

Maybe daft question but to cut a circle out of timber. I want the disc not the hole.
Am I better doing progressively deeper cuts with a router, or cutting it near as I can with a jigsaw then cleaning up with a router?

Got a little Makita 18v trimmer router wich has been great & also a bigger corded bosch one too for heavy duty work.

As long as you know what direction to cut there ok. Think milling machines cut direction.

An important set up consideration but also the one most overlooked

Depends on the thickness of material you want the circle in and the power of your router

Ive got a big dewalt that takes half inch shank cutters. I cut out speaker holes in old 38mm worktop. Did it all single depth cut but i went slowly and sharpened the cutter between each hole

Getting set up for worktops.
Electrician I was working for wouldn't leave me alone or shut up.
So distracted I popped the 30mm bush on the wrong way up. Trashed an immaculate jig
£120 later I tried again.

Yep, ive done that, but my jig was home made so no big drama

I was making curves in oak for a garden bench

I'd never thought of getting a router until I watched The New Yankee Workshop on the then new satellite TV and ended up with a Bosch 900 which has probably been used once every 5 years since. I seem to remember there was even a router magazine on sale at the time as they became more popular for the hobbyist.

parm answered a good amount but you can cut a circle with circular saw

with router its easier to do progresive cuts

Got one of those, a chippy chucked it out on a job years ago, cost me peanuts to fix it and its a brilliant machine, great table mounted to make mouldings

i have hybrid of this gives full usage of either a router or table saw and even the bandsaw

the hitachi old one i have is nasty forget that thing and it will damage the wood and you at the same time

you really have to think and hold it hard as you insert it into the worktop

If you've not used one for a few months / years it's sensible to set up a clamped test piece and have a few minutes on that with the router just to get you to realise which end you feed in from and any other strange but normal happenings when using a router.
My router is attached by 6 mm counter sunk hex head high tensile machine screws to the underside of my 10 mm thick steel work bench with the bit of steel I cut for the access hole ( 2" dia using a hole saw in a clamped down chunk of lumber to keep it from wandering " ...... as temporary plug to the open hole when it's not in use. I clamp a spar of straight wood either side edge of the bench to act as an adjustable fence . Sometimes hole sawing a part circle in the fence to safely cap off part of the cutter .
It's good enough to use a 1 & 3/4 dia with a straight 45 or 30 degree champhering cutter .

My mate Pip was a self employed kitchen fitter of long standing , fitting out some very very expensive London properties once a new owner had purchased the already pristine property .
Pip used to buy loads of new stuff for most jobs as he said it was cheaper for him rather than risking a malfunction and having to take time out to source & buy new replacements if he was out on a fitting . As a consequence he often gave me the old but still in excellent condition stuff.

In the end I had to give the massive variable speed 1800 watt all singing all dancing Bosch router away as it was too powerful for me to handle . I'm still not sur it it was a safe thing to do , seeing how forgetful , incompetent & feeble the majority of the members of the Men's Shed were that I gave it to.

you can just do it with just a circular saw and a table jig

then stick a pin in it and get cutting

Think I may make something up for aiding in future. Plus you can't see where your line is, unless you've got your head close to the base. I had to wing it. Fortunately, perfection wasn't necessary.

I engraved the distance on the router body the distance for the round foot plate edge or the flat on it the fence ought to be for me to cut along a marking knife cut line . Then it was a simple case of measuring to where the line was to be routed and use a pair of dividers to set the distance for the fence to be clamped down for a perfect accurate routed grove .
