Asbestos in Avometers

Well, I wouldn’t want to put words to anyone’s post, but I suspect it’s alluding to the way most things get taken way out of proportion in this country. Ie asbestos is bad, has killed and killed people so anything that may contain it is bagged and binned, treated as dangerous...
the reality is slightly different, as long as you don’t damage it, cause particles to float around etc.
In work we recently decided to scrap two perfectly good, rebuildable gas engines, by burying them, because there would be some asbestos in the gaskets...
Witness the current panic around Omygawd - the whole country will be skint before long...

Asbestos was used in plenty of things that don't get hot as well - like downpipes and roof sheets

Lady friend of mine, buying a bungalow, has been advised by her solicitor that there may be traces of asbestos in the artex ceiling coating and she should ‘engage a professional to remove it’.

Standard nanny state disclaimer.

Like everybody else, she plans to just skim it with plaster.

its fine to skim or remove it yourself but if you have work done by a building firm they will test it and want it removed if its the earlier stuff containing asbestos by the so called specialist removers before work commences

In 1975 my father sent me up on the asbestos garage roof with a wire brush and some bitumen paint. I cleaned the roofing bolts by scrubbing them and the roof around it and then painted them.

How do you determine where the exposure actually took place?
As a kid I was brought up in Yemen, the UAE and even Beirut. My playground was bombed out derelict buildings. God knows what I inhaled there.

Cheers all, sounds like they're free from it then. It was just given their age and the amount of asbestos that can be found in old electrical stuff I was a bit wary

when i was 16 was working where they were cutting asbestos sheets to build the walls and ceiling on a paint store you could hardly see each other for the dust worked in houses and shops for over 55 years in crap and filth sprayed 2k without airfed mask sandblasting as well obviously wearing breathing gear for that and my chest and lungs are clean and green no probs at all breathing oh and i smoked 60 fags a day for 20 years i know folks who didnt smoke and had clean jobs and died of cancer at 50 years old . who knows and why. all i can say is it dont help but its not the root cause

My uncle died last year with emphysema and lung cancer. He worked with asbestos for many years but as they could not conclusively pin point which job caused the asbestosis he got limited compensation. He was a tough old chap and out lasted many of his less fortunate colleagues.

Sadly that’s about the size of it. Compensation is a standard amount from a central fund

The latest is Indian marble with rich veins of amosite asbestos. The houses it’s been installed in are pretty worthless until it’s all removed

I remember my last house, had a lumpy old artex ceiling in the dining room. I fitted a bracket and pole to my orbital sander and laid into it for an afternoon. The dust got everywhere........

I worked on an old seismic vessel that had asbestos lagging around the internal exhausts, in the compressor room, and every time the air guns fired, out the back of the ship, the pipes would shed a sprinkle of dust.....

These things banged off at 2000 psi and could be heard miles away. We had 64 of them, 100 metres behind the boat.

They don't need much excuse. Dire warnings have now popped up threatening expulsion for mentioning various non radio related subjects. Heartwarming, I don't think. It's rare that I post there now, as they seem to be a clique of petty dictators and their loyal citizens.

Don't worry, it will disappear up its own valve base at some point, due to an unfortunate high density collision of admins and clique.

I know there'll be some on here with knowledge of Avometers.

I've been having a look at these and I know the bakelite they're made from themselves can contain asbestos but is there anything else within these meters that is asbestos?

I've seen some close up pictures of the battery compartment and noticed there were some pads around the battery that looked like they may be asbestos?

What makes you think the AVO case might (or could) contain asbestos? If the case is Bakelite (and not Vulcanite) it likely has a wood flour fill. Asbestos is used as a fill in Bakelite in high temperature applications. Old telephones are another example of Bakelite with a cellulose (wood flour) fill.

It is wise to be cautious but I think that is an asbestos free zone.

My building survey warned me of that as well. They didn't look very hard, what was supposedly artex turned out to be woodchip wall paper with a load of gloss paint over it. Got the plasterer to board over and skim....
