Asbestos in Avometers

I know there'll be some on here with knowledge of Avometers.

I've been having a look at these and I know the bakelite they're made from themselves can contain asbestos but is there anything else within these meters that is asbestos?

I've seen some close up pictures of the battery compartment and noticed there were some pads around the battery that looked like they may be asbestos?

It was this one I'd spotted but was wondering if there was anything else inside them that may contain it. it seems to have RUBAZO.... stamped on it. I've found asbestos commonly used in old theatre lamps in pads and spacers, given their age I though the meters also might commonly contain it.

I’ve never seen anything like that. The colour seems wrong for asbestos insulation and I’ve never seen any asbestos products with printing.

I think it’s a case of precautionary principle with this one.

I'm a member of a vintage radio forum where the old Avo's are venerated. I've never seen it mentioned, but I'll ask.

Unlikely IMO going by the pic but even if it was it's in such good condition the only precaution I would take personally is to change the batteries with care.

whats the problem even if it is. its not as if its loose and getting disturbed all the time see a lot in older distribution boards all the time there never replaced just flagged up as having it in them on reports

Why should it be asbestos? I think that it's just a coarse foam.

They don't need much excuse. Dire warnings have now popped up threatening expulsion for mentioning various non radio related subjects. Heartwarming, I don't think. It's rare that I post there now, as they seem to be a clique of petty dictators and their loyal citizens.

Collecting old Safes can be pretty dangerous.
I should imagine plenty had asbestos for fire protection. But even worse - some old safes had tear gas or even worse Phosgene inside glass vials. If the safe was opened incorrectly then the thief would be gassed. VERY nasty

I found one with a battery and mercury switch connected to explosives, luckily the battery was flat after years but still scary

Cheers all, sounds like they're free from it then. It was just given their age and the amount of asbestos that can be found in old electrical stuff I was a bit wary

Asbestos was used in plenty of things that don't get hot as well - like downpipes and roof sheets
